The three compatible hitches offered for your 2012 Subaru Outback Wagon are 2-inch Class III types like the Curt # 13390, which is the one I recommend for its greater clearance at your bumper.

This hitch installs using included hardware and its installation is shown in the linked video; written instructions and helpful hitch install articles are also linked for you.

Curt's warranty requires that you use a stabilizing strap like # 18050 to help support the load on the hitch if you use a bike rack or cargo carrier.
