Brake Controller Recommendation for 2015 Toyota Tundra

Question:

Trailer brake controller for Toyota Tundra 2015 with tow package. 2-axle trailer. Please explain proportional vs. time delay braking. Also, can any of the controllers be mounted *into* the dash as opposed to knee-bashing under the dash. Thanks.

A proportional controller has an internal sensor or accelerometer that can sense how quickly the tow vehicle is coming to a stop. During a braking event, the controller will send the correct amount of power to the trailer brakes so the vehicle and trailer stop at the same rate. This leads to safer, more predictable braking as well as less wear and tear on the braking systems, since neither the trailer nor the vehicle is doing all the work.

A time delayed controller allows you to pre-set the amount of power sent to the brakes, along with how quickly the power gets there but the same amount of power will be sent to the trailer brakes whether you're quickly tapping at the brake pedal or you're having a full-out pedal through the floorboards panic stop. I'll link you to our Brake Controller FAQ article that provides the full explanation of the differences.

If you're interested in a controller that doesn't hang from the underside of the dashboard, I can offer two nice options for you. The Curt Echo # C51180 would be the easiest installation. It would simply plug inline between the 7-way on your Tundra and the trailer. Your iOS or Android based smartphone would be used as the control interface/display. If you're looking for something that's a bit more traditional that doesn't use a smartphone, the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # RED44FR would be an excellent choice. You'll also need the # 3031-S wiring harness. The main portion of the controller installs out of sight under the dash and the control knob would mount on the dash or console within the driver's reach. We offer the # 331-TPSI-002 mounting panel which could be used in place of one of the switch knockouts in the dash just above the console for a very clean and professional-looking installation.
