Recommended Hitch Mount Bike Rack for a 2012 Nissan Altima Sedan with a Aftermarket Hitch
Question:
I have an 2012 Nissan Altima sedan, with a 1-1/4inch hitch. I would like to transport a Schwinn beach bike. The issue I have run into is the low clearance of the hitch. Can you offer any carrier suggestions? Thank you.

For your 2012 Nissan Altima sedan, I recommend the Kuat Beta folding 2-bike rack # B202-114 because it only weighs 12-3/5 pounds and can carry 2 bikes weighing a maximum 80 pounds. You may need an adapter bar like # UB01 to provide a horizontal mounting point if your beach bike has an oddly shaped frame. It will also measure 10-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the upright bar.
A second option to consider is the Swagman XTC 2-bike rack # S64670. It's a platform rack and can accommodate a variety of bike sizes. The carrying capacity is 2 bikes at 35 pounds per bike maximum. I also recommend an anti-rattle hitch lock and cable # S64031 because it will allow you to lock your bike rack to your hitch and secure your beach bike to the bike rack. A nice peace of mind.
It's also important to double-check your owners manual on your Altima to determine the maximum tongue weight of your car. And then be mindful not to exceed it. Based on my research though it is most likely 100 pounds.
