Transmission Cooler Recommendation for 2001 Ford Excursion

I have a 2001 Excursion. Factory oil cooler. Going on a 1200 mile trip with 8500 lb camper in tow. Bought all my hitch equipment from you guys several years ago. Works fine, but I havent left town. Most ford sites says the stock cooler will fry my tranny under heavy loads. Your site says the bigger the better. What would you recommend. Can make alterations as necessary.

Generally speaking, you'll want to choose the largest cooler that will fit in the available space right behind the vehicle grille. For an Excursion, there won't be any problem with available space. The only caution about going with too large of a cooler is that it could lengthen the amount of time it takes for the vehicle to warm up in a cold climate.

The Derale # D13504 would be an very good choice. It's 11 x 12 inch size would provide plenty of supplemental cooling to protect your transmission. To make installation easier, Derale recommends the # D13025 radiator adapter fitting which will allow you to tap the lines for the supplemental cooler into the return line from the radiator to the transmission without needing to cut or flare any lines.

You can install transmission coolers like the Derale part #D13403 that you mentioned in any orientation so however you find that it fits your application the best will be totally fine.
