For a hitch for your 2012 Chevy Sonic hatchback I would recommend the Draw Tite Hitch part # 24878 as it is the most popular hitch we offer confirmed to fit your vehicle.
This hitch has a 200 lb tongue weight and 2,000 lb total trailer weight capacity so you will need to be sure the trailer weighs less than that when totally loaded. Also, you will need to check the owners manual of your vehicle to determine what Chevy says is your towing capacities. The lower of the two sets of capacities between the hitch and the vehicle will be your overall towing capacity.
I attached an install video for this hitch for you to check out as well.
Since you plan on doing some towing the correct ball mount is # 3590 and the correct pin and clip is # PC2. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256 and for a 2 inch use # 19258. For trailer wiring use # 118640. I have linked instructions for the wiring as well.
