A Sidewinder replacement pin box is the best solution for the turning clearance issues that arise when using a short-bed truck to pull a 5th wheel trailer. Sidewinders move the truck/trailer pivot point back toward the trailer by 22-inches, far more than any sliding hitch can. You can still use your sliding hitch with a Sidewinder but it can never be used in its rearward position; it must always remain locked in its forward position.

There are two basic types of Sidewinder as you noted, standard and air spring cushioned. The addition of the air spring will deliver superior ride quality by reducing longitudinal and vertical shock. A cushioned pin box also reduces the stresses transmitted to the coach's frame and to the trailer's contents.

Sidewinders are selected by checking your existing pin box brand and part number against the table in the linked article. If you have one of the pin boxes listed you'll be able to see the standard and cushioned Sidewinders that will bolt on in its place. For instance, the standard Sidewinder you referenced, part # ST400-5AS16K, will bolt on in place of any of the following Leland pin boxes: 7910, 7920 and 7921.
