Differences Between Curt and Draw-Tite Class I Trailer Hitches for 2012 Toyota Prius V
Question:
what advantage does a Curti 1 1/4 hitch rack have over a Draw-Tite 11/4 hitch rack when used for Rocy Mnt Tandem Tailpipe bike rack on a Toyota Prius V? Why is the Curt rack so much heavier than Draw -tite rack?

The Curt # C11276 and the Draw-Tite # 24847 Class I hitches share the same weight capacity, and the installation procedure is fairly similar. In actuality, the Curt weighs about 8 lbs more than the Draw-Tite hitch. The Curt hitch is constructed of round tube steel that's a bit larger in diameter than the square tube stock the Draw-Tite model is constructed of, which would account for the weight difference. Since both hitches have been tested and found to have the same weight bearing capacity, the extra weight carried by the Curt model isn't really providing you any benefit.
Curt's warranty requirements also stipulate that a stabilizing strap, part # 18050 be used to support any non trailer load. Not only is this an extra expense, but on certain vehicles such as Prius models with the spoilers at the top of the rear hatch, the strap is difficult to install and could possibly damage the spoiler. Due to this, as well as the less expensive price and the lighter weight, I'd recommend the Draw-Tite # 24847.
I've linked you to install videos for both hitches, as well as a demonstration video for the stabilizing strap.
