The Hopkins 4-Pole to 7-Pole and 4-Pole Adapter # 37185 that you referenced accepts a vehicle's 4-pole flat trailer connector and adapts that type of connector to a 7-way RV-style blade connector socket. This socket accepts a male trailer-side 7-way plug like # H20046. The Hopkins adapter also provides a 4-pole socket, meaning that with this item installed the lights for either a 4-pole- or 7-pole-equipped trailer can be connected to the tow vehicle.
The other wire leads on the Hopkins # 37185 are provided to allow additional wiring functions to be added. These functions can include 12V power for a trailer (black wire), power for electric trailer brakes (blue wire) and a reverse light signal (purple wire) for trailers with this type of lighting installed. Those three functions are in addition to the basic stop/turn/tail light functions provided by the incoming 4-pole. The white wire with ring terminal is a ground that attaches to a clean bare metal spot on the vehicle's frame.
I was not able to find the other part number you referenced, 47185. Please let me know the other item's part number and I will be happy to explain any differences.
