Aftermarket Trailer Hitch & Wiring for 2015 Honda CR-V AWD EX-L
Question:
I am in the process of purchasing a 2015 Honda CR-V AWD EX-L 2 to 3 week timeframe. I am considering adding the Trailer Hitch accessory package through the Honda dealership which includes the trailer electrical wiring and a Class I trailer hitch receiver that can support only up to two 2 bikes. Ideally I would like to a have Class II or III trailer hitch receiver that can support up to four 4 bikes. What are my options? Is it better to wait until I receive the vehicle and then have a Class II or III trailer hitch receiver installed by a different shop? Or is there an OEM-replacement Class II or III trailer hitch receiver available that can be switched with the original Class I receiver using the same bolt pattern? What are the cost considerations with these possibilities?

We do offer both aftermarket trailer hitches and wiring harnesses for your 2015 Honda CR-V AWD EX-L. Generally speaking, dealer-installed tow packages will end up with a final total cost that is more than if you purchase an aftermarket hitch and wiring harness and install these yourself. The only specialized tool needed for hitch installation, apart from the basic tools, is a torque wrench which you may be able to borrow. Some auto parts stores will lend or rent these. One is required for safe hitch installation.
If you don't want to do the hitch install yourself you may still be able to save money over the dealer-installed package by using a local auto shop to do the install. The written instructions for the hitch I recommended and two helpful articles are all linked at right.
We do offer 2-inch Class III hitches for your CR-V that have the capacity required for a 4-bike hitch rack. All can be seen on the link at right. The one I suggest is the Draw-Tite # 75742 and I suggest this one for its higher 675-lb tongue weight capacity which is plenty for a large bike rack or cargo carrier. If you want to install a wiring harness you can use the TowReady plug-and-play kit # 118561 which requires no cutting, splicing or taping. Please refer to the linked video.
With this hitch installed you can use a compatible Class III bike rack. The link at right will show you all Class III-compatible 4-bike carriers. Among the best we offer is Yakima's FullSwing 4 Bike Rack # Y02465. This unique rack swings out of the way of the rear of the vehicle - even when loaded with bikes - to give you full access to the vehicle cargo area. It includes locks for both the rack itself and your bikes and carries a limited lifetime warranty.
The linked article on bike racks will help you select one that suits your bikes and your vehicle.
