#PIT5282F: Procedure for Installation of an Aftermarket
Trailer Brake Controller or In Lieu of Factory Trailer Brake
Controller
(Dec 19, 2019)Subject: Procedure for Installation of an Aftermarket Trailer Brake Controller or In Lieu of Factory Trailer Brake Controller
Supersession StatementThis PI was superseded to add the 2020 models. Please discard PIT5282E.Condition/ConcernSome customers may request to have an aftermarket trailer brake controller added to their vehicle,
OR an aftermarket trailer brake controller added in lieu of the factory integrated trailer brake
controller (ITBC) (RPO JL1). Recommendation/Instructions
Obtain a trailer brake controller harness, GM Part # 23184088, as shown below.
Connect the harness to the MID-BEC (X61A). The MID-BEC is located under the I/P to the left of
the steering column. The harness connection point (1) is illustrated below.
The trailer brake controller harness consist of 4 blunt cut wires and a label that calls out the wire
colors and each wire’s function, also shown below. Use these 4 blunt cut wires to connect to the
aftermarket trailer brake control.
Perform this step ONLY if equipped with RPO JL1 where the customer is requesting the factory
trailer brake system be bypassed to add an aftermarket trailer brake controller. Locate connector
X185 Or X138 (varies with vehicle build; refer to SI), which is near the underhood fuse block,
terminal 32. Circuit 47 ends at the body harness side of X185 or X138 terminal 32, which comes
from the X61A junction block. Obtain enough Dark Blue 12 gauge wire to run from X185 or X138 to
the 7-way trailer connector at the bumper. Attach terminated lead part number 13327155 to one
end of the Dark Blue and insert into the chassis harness side of the X185 or X138 connector terminal
32. Run the Dark Blue wire in its own conduit along the frame to the 7-way trailer connector at the
bumper. Remove circuit 47 from the 7-way trailer connector terminal “C” and tape the bare terminal
and attach to the harness. Attach terminal part number 12110853, located in Delphi Tray 4, to the
other end of the Dark Blue wire, with the correct weather pack seal, and insert it into the 7-way
trailer connector terminal “C.”
Warranty InformationIf the customer wishes to have an aftermarket brake controller installed in their vehicle, it would be
considered as a Customer Pay option. From GM:GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these
technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a
vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and
safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that
condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
Thank you for all of the details, you have already done quite a bit of the work in narrowing down the problem. Since the common denominator in this situation is your 2014 Toyota Tundra the issue can be isolated to that. You should be getting 12V of…
If nothing is working, then I would first check to see if any tow package fuses or relays are missing or blown. Use the owner's manual to find all fuse/relay locations. If that is not the issue, then it sounds like the previous owner has done a…
Use your tester to test the brown wire going into the converter for wiring harness #C55367. If there is no power going into the box then there is an issue on the vehicle wiring. There could be a blown fuse for the trailer running lights. Use the…
The small grey connector that is attached to the red fuse holder wire on the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector part #C55367 for a 2000 Toyota Tundra is located in the vehicle's engine compartment between…
I spoke with my contact at Curt regarding the correct wiring harness for your 2001 Toyota Tundra. He states that it is very likely that while your truck is labeled as a 2001 model, it was actually built in late 2000 with the 2000 model factory plug…
It looks like the connector you need is actually already plugged into something which I have pointed out in the picture you sent. The empty plugs on the right side do not seem to match the connector on the Curt wiring harness #C55367 for the 2000…
If all you want is to prevent the 12 volt power supply of your trailer battery wiring from backfeeding onto your vehicle wiring or vice versa what you need is a one-way diode like part #RM-690. This only allows current to flow in one direction so…
I understand your confusion. The views of the trailer connector shown on the wiring page on the website are from the INSIDE of the plug, where you would wire it. The markings on the front cover do show which terminal serves which function, and are a…
Some 2012 Ford E series vans will have a factory plug and some will not. If your van came with a factory trailer connector then the wiring is already there and active. But if it did not come from the factory with a trailer connector, the factory…
I have a solution for you that I can provide, but we aren't going to have a custom fit hitch to fit a vehicle like what you referenced. I spoke to my contacts at Curt and Reese and the only styles of hitches that can be made to fit a service body…
