It really depends on the carrier you go for. For the Thule Taxi XT # TH810001 I recommend putting a tie down in the front. Just because there is only one narrow strap securing your paddle board to the carrier and when you're driving at high speeds the paddle board will catch quite a bit of air which will raise the front of the board.

I'd recommend going with the Draw-Tite Class III hitch, part # 75940. The Curt # C13136 would seem to be the obvious choice due to its higher capacity and lower cost, but as a part of their warranty stipulations, Curt requires that a stabilizing strap like part # 18050 be used. If you are talking about Hidden Hitch model 87603 it is going to be discontinued but it also does not attach to the gas tank. It has that center attachment point that connects to a cross member forward of the trunk pan. I think you might be confusing the trunk pan with the gas tank.
