The length of the ball mount used in a trailer hitch does not affect the amount of tongue weight (TW) applied to the hitch ball by the trailer, but it does affect the amount of stress applied to the hitch's receiver tube by the ball mount.
A very long ball mount would apply MORE pressure to the hitch tube than a shorter one, much in the same way that adding a cheater bar to a tire iron (to make it longer so you have more leverage) will allow you to put more pressure on the lug nut.

A trailer weighing 8000 lb would be about twice the 4100 lb towing capacity of your 2001 Dodge Durango, according to what I found online. I wasn't able to find a pdf copy of the owner's manual online, so I'd recommend checking your owner's manual for confirmation of that towing capacity.
The highest capacity hitch we offer for the 2001 Durango would have a 5000 lb towing/500 lb tongue weight capacity like the Curt Class III, part # C13097. Even though the Draw-Tite # 75081 hitch you'd... view full answer...

Typically a travel trailer that has an unloaded tongue weight (TW) or dry hitch weight of 410-lbs will have a loaded TW somewhere in the 600-650-lb range by the time you fill your water and propane tanks and load your supplies and recreational equipment. A WD system rated for up to 1200-lbs such as the Pro Series # 49570 would be too stiff for a 600-lb TW.
If this is your actual measured TW figure (we offer a handy scale to make it easy to check, part # e99044) then lighter-rated replacement... view full answer...

If the 725 pound figure represents the maximum tongue of your trailer when fully loaded, I would recommend the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System, part # 66073. This system combines the High Performance Trunnion Weight Distribution System with the Dual Cam Sway Control System. The Dual Cam system is the top of the line in sway control, and will prevent trailer sway before it can occur.
The system is specifically designed for trailers with tongue weights from 400 to 800 lbs.

The bar you are speaking of is capable of towing up to the tow capacity of the vehicle, if the vehicle is correctly equipped. The receiver you referenced, the CURT Class III part # 13072 can handle 6000 lbs, 600 lb TW. When equipped with a weight distribution system, the receiver can handle 9000 lb towing, 900 lb TW.
I did some research on the Durango, and found some references listing the towing capacity at 8950 lbs. Some references state that that figure was only for the 5.7 L hemi,... view full answer...
I spoke with my contact at Swagman and she told me that you would have to subtract the weight of the rack and bikes to get the most accurate tongue weight capacity of the Swagman Original, # S64675.
So without bikes on the rack, your tongue weight with the rack installed would be 350 pounds. It has a gross trailer weight capacity of 3,500 pounds. view full answer...
