Valley hitches have been out of business for so long we don't have a way to look up what their part numbers fit so the best solution have for a trailer hitch that fits your 2010 Mercury Mariner would be the Draw Tite part # 75751 which is a 2 inch hitch with plenty of capacity and installs easily as well!

There are a few differences between the two controllers.
The Voyager has been around for a looooooooong time. It uses an internal pendulum to determine how quickly the tow vehicle is braking. In order to operate correctly, this level of the pendulum needs to be adjusted. The Voyager also lacks a digital display which makes troubleshooting more difficult. The controller does not provide boost settings and is not compatible with electric over hydraulic braking systems.

The presence of the back-up sensors will not have any bearing on the installation of a hitch. The Curt # 13650 would be an excellent choice that would work well for you. This hitch will fit whether or not your vehicle is equipped with the OEM 1-1/4 inch receiver.

Vehicles using trailer wiring harness # 40455 may need to see a local Ford or Mazda dealer for a relay. The relay is needed to activate the tow package wiring circuit. It sounds like your 2007 Mercury Mariner is missing that relay. If you tested the wiring on your 2008 Mercury Mariner and it is operating properly but then when you install a wire converter unit the 4-Way flat connector isn't operating properly then yes, I would say that is an indication of a faulty converter/ModuLite wiring unit. In this case I recommend replacing your wiring with the T-One # 118551 as it sounds like you don't have the factory tow package.

If your 2005 Mercury Mariner has side curtain air bags then you will want to install tracks # THTP54 further in (towards the middle) on the vehicle roof to avoid interference. The wiring for things like the dome light are more or less in the center of the vehicle so you would not worry about that unless you wanted to put tracks in the middle of the roof.

If you are absolutely sure you wouldn't exceed the capacity of the one axle on your trailer you could get by with just one axle. You are going to have to move the good axle to where the center equalizer is currently at to ensure you get proper axle placement which ensures that your trailer tongue weight will be in the 10 to 15 percent of the total trailer weight range so that you don't have sway.

The extra wire on a 4 Pole to 5 Pole adapter like part # 20036, will connect to one of the two wires running to the reverse light bulb. You can use either the passenger or the driver side, it makes no difference.
In order to determine which wire you need to splice into, you will either need to use a circuit tester, like part # PTW2993, or since there is only two wires you can just go by trial and error. It sounds like your installed might be describing a universal type-converter that needs to be hardwired into the vehicle.
