You will not need a hitch extender for the Kuat Beta on your 2006 Saturn Ion 3. The Kuat Beta # B202-114 measures 10-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the upright bar. Since the bike rack has a rise shank, you will want to make sure there is room for the shank rise to clear the bumper. I am not sure what you mean by "mid" but the only 2004 Saturn Ion that can be flat-towed with all four wheels on the ground are the ones with a manual transmission.
