I believe I found the review online where a single customer said he had a problem installing the Curt Hitch part # 13574 on his 2010 Honda Element. I wish I knew more about the issue he was having, but I checked with Curt and they have said that as long as the 2010 Honda Element is not an SC model this hitch should work well and haven't heard of any issues beyond that. I do have a recommendation for you, but I am not confident that the Thule rack, # TH9058, will tilt down far enough to lower the tailgate on your 2007 Honda Element.

I took a look at the online version of the owner's manual for your 2006 Honda Element and it does state that only Class S rated chains should be used, and they should only be installed on the front tires. A Class S rating just means that the snow chains are specifically designed for wheel wells that don't have a lot of clearance to work with.

The only hitch that we have available for your 2008 Honda Element SC is a class I hitch. We have the Curt # C11699. This hitch offers a 200-lb tongue weight and 2000-lb gross towing weight ratings and installs without welding or drilling, but does require that some holes be enlarged by drilling, filing, or rotary tool. I'd recommend the etrailer Class III hitch, part # e78KR which is compatible with all models of the 2010 Honda Element. There are options available that will allow you to carry your Electra Townie bikes on your 2010 Honda Element, but I do not recommend using a trunk mounted bike rack if you have the rear spoiler. This is actually the case with all of our swing-away bike racks. This is simply because if you needed to pull over on the shoulder of a highway you would want the rack to swing to the right (away from traffic) when trying to access the rear cargo area of your vehicle.

What happened to you with the hitch that had the stopper is actually a pretty common occurrence. That stopper is in the hitch tubes of Class I hitches to prevent the use of heavier Class II accessories. Reason being that Class I hitches are lighter duty. The etrailer trailer hitch part # e78KR does not have a stopper so it would work well for you as long as your bike rack is designed for a 2 inch trailer hitch.
