Question:

I have a 2011 Honda Element and I am looking for a hitch mounted aluminum carrier. What do you recommend?

Your 2011 Honda Element can be fitted with two classes of hitch, either a 1-1/4-inch Class I type or a 2-inch Class III. For use with a hitch-mount cargo carrier the 2-inch hitch is definitely preferred for its higher capacity. All of the Class III hitches we offer for your Element can be seen on the link provided, and all offer the same 350-lb tongue weight capacity. You can check your hitch safety/warning sticker to confirm its weight rating.

Your Element may have a different tongue weight rating, so its a good idea to review your owners manual (or check with your dealership) just to confirm that the vehicle frame structure has the same rating as these hitches. If rated lower than the hitch you need to observe that lower limit.

Lightweight cargo carriers such as the aluminum Curt # C18113 that you referenced are an excellent choice for maximizing the amount of cargo weight you can transport. It is 49 X 22-1/2 and weighs 32 pounds. The lighter the carrier, the more of the hitch capacity remains available for your loaded cargo. For example, with a 350-lb-rated hitch this carrier would allow you to load up to 325-lbs (350 - 32 = 318). Please note that even though this carrier is rated for 500-lbs of loaded weight, you must remain within the capacity of the lowest-rated item (either the vehicle, hitch or carrier). The linked video shows this unit in use on a comparable vehicle.

I have included a link to our main page for all Class III carriers that will fit 2-inch hitches. At the top of the page you can select your preference for fixed or folding types as well as for carrier size, weight capacity and material.

There is one measurement you will want to take before selecting a carrier to ensure its fit on your Element.
Simply measure from the hitch pin hole on your receiver to the rear-most part of the car. This is the amount of clearance you will need from your carrier. For all cargo carriers we offer this hitch-pin-to-carrier clearance measurement is provided to help you ensure a good fit with your vehicle. The fixed Curt # C18113 offers 6-inches of clearance from the hitch pin hole.

Both carriers include a hitch pin and clip, but some other carriers will require these, or a locking hitch pin, be purchased separately. For a standard pin and clip you can use # PC3 or for a locking/anti-rattle option you can use part # 63232.

I have linked a helpful article concerning cargo carriers that might be useful to you as you consider your preferences. I have also included a link to cargo control products that can help secure your items.
