This hitch is heavy duty and the reason why I chose this hitch is due to it being American made. Yes, USA made and not those chinese cheap junk.

The tutorial online at eTrailer helped a lot. Install took me about an hour because I took my time watching the video first then played it part by part by pausing the video as I do the install. Be sure to torque all the nuts.

Attached a back up light on the hitch for more visibility at night.

by:

Hardware (carriage bolts and spacer) was too large to fit in frame access hole. I emailed etrailer about the hardware not fitting and they sent me a link to the install video. They were not helpful in resolving the issue.

I ended up going having to manually file the access hole in order to make the hardware fit.

The install was extremely frustrating due to the tight access.

The 2001 CR-V in the installation video had a large enough access hole that it did not need to be enlarged for the spacer block. Unfortunately, your CR-V seems to have a smaller access hole. In the instructions, Step 2 indicates that if the hole in the frame is too small, it will need to be enlarged to 1-1/4 inch diameter. I have linked the instructions for your convenience.

2001 Honda CR-V

Product arrived beat up from shipping. The carriage bolts they sent were too large to be fed through the holes in my vehicle's chassis, even though this hitch was designed for my exact make, model, and year Honda CR-V. I had to drive 30 minutes each way to pick up a 40 dollar drill bit (a massive 1" metal bit). When I finally mocked it up with the bolts that had been fed through the frame, I found that the hitch itself was bent on both sides, probably from shipping. The holes didn't match up with the bolts. Realizing it would be a huge hassle to return the unit, I opted to optically align the hitch by bending it with another large person to help me. Not very confidence inspiring! it seems like it would be a great unit if they bothered to spec hardware that fits and packaged it better. Either this unit was fabricated without a proper jig, or the shipping carrier really mishandled my item. Either way, etrailer and/or Curt should be more careful. I imagine they ship thousands of hitches a year so I would have expected these things to be sorted out. It gets 2 stars because it had potential to be a great experience.

I apologize for these inconveniences as it seems as though your hitch experience had all the common issues that are sometimes associated with installing these receivers. Because you have a 2001, the weld nuts probably needed cleaned which is where the hardware not fitting is the first issue that could have been easily resolved. Attached is a help article explaining this. Secondly, the hitch receiver was flexed. This has a fix of bending back into alignment with the help of this other attached help article.

1997 Honda CR-V

The product is very good for the price. Install easily. the installation
kit was very helpful especially the wire that would attach to the bolt.

There's one issue, the width was an inch short. I had to force swing
the front hole to line up with the chassis hole, the back hole, I had to
rim the chassis hole to line up with the hitch hole.

Unfortunately, when I was rimming the hole, the wire was hanging in the
hole and broke off, leaving the bolt and the washer inside the chassis.

I wonder if it's possible to send me another bolt, washer and the wire that attaches to the bolt cause I can't get the bolt and the washer plate out.
bolt.

Did not fit at all waste of money. The holes are off by almost a inch after going thru all the trouble or trying to make this crap fit

If you are having troubles with the holes not lining up, it could be that the hitch has been flexed during shipment. This is common amongst hitches, since the mounting brackets are made from a mild steel that allows the hitch to flex with the vehicle after installation. If the entire hitch was made of rigid steel, there would be a greater chance of the hitch being damaged and experiencing stress cracks. Such cracks could cause the hitch to malfunction. This flexing often times will cause the holes not to align. Because of this we do have a help article I have the link attached below that will walk you through the process of straightening the hitch.

Overall good build quality and install kit. The passenger side support is too close to the stock muffler and the exhaust hits at times. Don't expect them to change the design on a hitch for a 20+ year old vehicle. The receiver is just long enough that my Rocky Mounts bike rack clears the spare tire without need of an extension. You rack may vary.

by:

This is a great price for the product.
That
said, I had to drill out the U-bolt mounting bracket as the holes were not aligned correctly, but a 1/2 inch drill bit will offset the difference and allow for mounting to the tow point.
The fish wire idea utilizing existing unibody frame holes is a great idea, but it would be nice to have 2 fish wires in the kit. By the 4th hole, the fish wire doesn't like to come off the bolt and causes a small clearance issue, solvable with some vice grips.

All said, minor modification and it's a pretty straightforward kit.

Haven't towed anything yet but part 13314 installed very solid on my 2001 Honda cr-v. 4/5 stars because the bolts and the silver rectangle things don't fit through the middle hole. Which required me to grind of a slit in the hole and bend it out with crowbar to get these parts to fit through there. I used a grinder because I lacked other tools. Just be prepared to drill on your cr-v with this kit. (Not a suggestion to void warranty but it's so it can be bolted on in the first place).
1 of my pictures shows that slit I made.

Thanks. And thank you etrailer.

I watched the video of the hitch installation before doing my install. I had thought removing the exhaust hangers might be difficult ... it wasn't. I installed without assistance BUT I had a jack to hold hitch in place while getting bolts lined up. If you don't have this tool, it will be a two person job.

Customer service from eTrailer was excellent! ( BTW I am a repeat customer )

Install was quick and easy. Wiring was a breeze connector was behind speaker on left side for trailer lights. Only thing is my exhaust rattles on hitch now. Just kind of annoying but worth it to have a hitch.

by:

Super easy to install and heavy duty. Shipping was fast. Looks to be a great product for the price. Don’t forget to buy the wiring harness at the same time like I did!

by:

Tested it right away for towing a car using a car dolly. It held pretty good with no problems and towed the car for 300miles and was cruising at 80mph with no issues.

Great price, had the vehicle matched wording harness easily accessible and install was a dream especially with the videos on [online] from their channel. Definitely have my business in the future.

1999 Honda CR-V

I bought the class 3 hitch and wiring harness for my 99 crv. I had watched the installation video before receiving the parts and it seemed pretty straightforward. When it arrived, I installed it during my lunch in 35 minutes and the fit and finish looks factory! The next day during lunch installed the wiring harness in about 20 minutes. It uses the factory connector and tucks away invisible untill you need it. I am THRILLED with the product and looking forward to using it. The car is rated for a 1000 lbs towing and the hitch is overkill, but I already had the 2" insert and ball and the price is the same as a lighter duty hitch. To me it seems the best deal on the market.

Thank you for your interest in my satisfaction! I find it hard to believe you can follow up on every purchase made online but I feel good that you are asking for my opinion.Let me assure you that I am completely, 100 satisfied with the Curt hitch and wiring harness that I bought. It was a piece of cake to install ok, Im a mechanic and it is probably stronger than the car I installed it on. I have pulled my trailer with complete confidence and am delighted in the products you offer.Thank you!

This hitch was for my son's old 1999 Honda CRV. Crawling under and working on a 17 year old car that lives in the winter salt is never fun, and fishing the bolts and backing plates into place can also be something of a challenge. I strongly encourage you to measure the spacing of the bolt holes on the hitch so you can make sure that you install the hardware correctly. Don't ask me how I know. I guess having to drop the rear part of the exhaust system is pretty standard when installing a trailer hitch, and this is no exception. Also, the instructions could be a bit more detailed. When all was said and done, however, the hitch fits perfectly and I could not ask for anything more, especially at the e-trailer price.

My son has used the hitch to tow a trailer from Ohio to Texas and back again. It really is a great hitch at a great price.

After a year of owning this hitch it is working well, just as designed on my '97 Honda CRV. Would recommend this hitch to anyone considering it for hauling riding lawn mowers or for a slide in bike rack.

Great! No issues

by:
1999 Honda CR-V

The hitch works great, and with the lift and tires I have installed, it fills out the back of the car nicely. I have since towed 3500lbs with it, and the car may not like it very much, but it did it, and the hitch worked just fine. My only issue is that is was not packed well enough in shipping. When it arrives, the two arms that go between the frame rails and the draw bar were bent. I would not have been able to install it if I was not able to forceably bend it straight again.

Installed on my 1998 Honda CR-V, has worked fantastic! Took only about an hour to install by myself, torqued it down and haven’t had any problems or loosening since. Regularly tow my small trailer with my motorcycle and four wheeler on it (about 500 lbs total) with no trouble. Highly recommend!

  • Bike Rack Recommendation for 1999 Honda CR-V That Can Allow Access to Rear Cargo Area
If you need to access the rear cargo door area of your 1999 CR-V with bikes loaded I have a solution that will work for that but you can't open the rear door of a vehicle with a spare tire mounted bike rack installed. The hinges of the door aren't rated for the extra which means you could damage them. You'd have to go with a hitch mounted bike rack that can swing out like the SportRack Ridge Swing part # SR2415 which can swing out and away from the rear of a vehicle with bikes loaded to...

That measurement is 6-1/2 inches. This is a Class lll hitch and it has a 2 inch receiver opening.
