V-Bar Icebreakers

V-Bar Icebreakers

The V-shaped studs (also known as icebreakers, spikes, or cleats) that are built into these twist-link tire chains bite into ice, providing superior grip for a safer ride on ice-covered roads.

Installation

1. Drape the chain over both tires of your dual-tire setup, making sure that the center chain is between the tires and that the V-bars are facing out. (You can also lay the chain out and then drive onto it.)

2. Drive forward about 1/4 of a tire revolution.

3. Fasten the ends of the chain together.

4. Drive forward a bit and tighten the chain as needed by moving the hook to the next link.

You can use rubber or chain adjusters (sold separately) to increase the tension on the chains for a tighter fit.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Ford

I have a Ford dually with a Salt Dogg spreader. During the last two snow storms (5/8 inches) in northwest NJ, I got stuck on small hills in four wheel drive. I looked on line and liked the etrailer website. i called to clarify a question on size (17 inch rims) and spoke to Adam. He was very helpful and knowledgeable--I ordered directly on the phone which was quick and easy (none of the typical on line ordering BS). The order came in several days and was packed well considering it weighed 65 lbs--the box was not damaged/dented in anyway (three cheers for UPS--I avoid FEDEX at all costs). I haven't used them yet, but they look heavy duty and well make. i'll be back after they are used.

Other than test fitting, I have not used in snowy road conditions yet. State law requires me to have snow chains due to my truck's weight.

by:

Fit like they should only problem was when the chains were assembled one cross link was twisted. Spent a half hour trying to untangle it but was an easy fix, uncrimped it and took the twist out and recrimped it and all is good

by:

Unfortunately I haven't used the snow chains yet.

As always very satisfied with my order and service. I love etrailer.
Great products.

Have not tried the chains on our church bus yet, but I am very happy with the customer service I received as well as the shipping time. Price is fair and shipping price was great. Quality of chains seems well made, I will update after use. Thank you.

Some Deadly tire chains!! I highly recommend these bad boys to anyone who enjoys driving in the snow!

I had high hopes for my purchase since there was great reviews. Unfortunately that was not my experience. First issue, only part of order showed up when delivered. Reached out to etrailer to investigate. A few days later they shipped out the other set of chains I ordered. That issue was resolved. Second issue, I knew I would need to trim back the extra links on my chains, I was shocked as to how much I needed to cut off. It included a section of the ladder chain. Which ultimately wasn’t really an issue, I just think it should be clear this is a cut to fit tire chain, not a trim. I double checked the website, the canvas bag, and my tires, this was an appropriate set for those tires. Ultimately I’m very satisfied with the product. Not satisfied with seller/delivery.

I bought a pair of twist link (TC3235) for my front tires and V-Bars (TC3835) for my rear tires, so writing a combined review. The V-Bars have more traction but my front end doesn't have as much clearance so I opted for the twist links in the front.  I've now used these offroad 4 times, and once briefly onroad during a major ice storm that left all of our roads with skating rink type ice.
First - both chains fit 37" x 12.5 R18 tires perfectly.  This is despite the fitment not being listed on etrailer.com and the etrailer CS rep telling me they wouldn't fit.  The Titan catalogue / website does list 37x12.5R18.
Second - two pair of chains *just* fit in a milwaukee packout "Compact Tool Box" (model No: 48-22-8422).  There isn't a wasted inch of space.  After using them, I dry them in my garage, then douse them in WD-40 before putting them back in the packout.  These chains are made from an alloy that prioritizes strength over corrosion resistance, so surface rust appears pretty quickly on them.  Be warned that lifting all four chains together is heavy.
Third - They give amazing offroad traction.  The only way you're getting stuck is by getting high-centered.  You will not run out of traction if you have weight on your tires.  However, it is easy to get high centered when using these in the snow if you aren't careful.  Don't spin your tires, or your axles and frame rails will be holding the vehicle while your wheels hang in the air.
Fourth - I would only recommend using these onroad in very limited circumstances. During an ice storm I had to get a neighbor to the hospital. We live on an extremely steep hill and the roads had 1" of clear ice on them.  With the chains it was like the ice wasn't there.  But the whole truck vibrated a lot.  And it probably prematurely wore the chains.  If I drove faster than ~15-20 mph it really rattled the truck.  (offroad in the snow I'll drive 40+ mph no problem with these.  but driving on hard surfaces causes a lot of vibration).

I’ve not had to use these yet, but I have installed them just to make sure they fit and I know what I’m doing when the time comes. These give me piece of mind, plain and simple. I’ve had and used other types of chains and they just do last like they should for the cost - these will. They’re very robust and a must have if you regularly drive in environments where this type of safety/recovery gear is either required or strongly suggested.

by:

The item went out of stock after I ordered it. However, customer service was very quick to source it and shipped it out very quickly. The level of attention by their whole team was excellent. I was receiving followup emails letting me know of the status of the order all the way up to even after shipment delivery.

by:

Quick and easy. One of my chain tensioner's broke and they had new ind out to me asap. I’ve always had a good experience with these folks.

by:

These are first rate quality HD tire chains. They're a good fit on my tires. As suggested, I practiced putting them on for first time in dry weather. From watching video instructions, I was able to attach and adjust chains w/out issue. I tightened them with three 15 " rubber bungees. Haven't had to use them yet.

by:

All items arrived in good condition in five days on Colorado mountain area, and were easy to install. The products all appear to be of good quality and should perform as expected when used. for 2017 Ram 2500, no enough clearance on rear tires, but no problem on Front tires clearance. Recommend the V-bar links and chain tighteners used on off-road snow and ice, 4 wheels drive, front ties for 2017 Ram 2500

by:

I’m impressed. These tire chains are the real deal. I looked at various options online, Amazon, etc. I found etrailer. First, the web page is packed with info, tutorials, etc. once I ordered there was continuous communication. I downgraded from a 4x4 to a 4x2, and drive up to Buffalo, NY, from coastal Carolina. These chains are impressive and will provide traction and ease of mind going through the snow belt areas along Lake Erie and parts of the blue ridge mountains. I’ve hit heavy snow on this trip and wished I had a good tire chain. This resolved it. Installing is a breeze be sure to get the tire chain adjusters with them! Excellent service!

by:

Received it 2 days back and it broke on its very first use within 10 mins of driving. Not sure if this is a design defect or poor quality of material. I tried following instructions very closely so doubt if anything was wrong in the way it was mounted. There was ample clearance in wheel well and it seems the chain just could not take stress.

From my research your truck came from the factory with either 235/80-17 or 265/70-18 sized tires. According to an online owner's manual I found if you have 265/70-18 sized tires you will have minimal clearance for tire chains. You should check your owner's manual to verify. We have dually tire chain setups for your tire size of 245/75-17 like the Titan Twist Link set part # TC4231 which will work really well, but since cable setups are more designed for emergency use they aren't typically used on heavier duty vehicles like duallys. They don't typically last very long so I wouldn't recommend that route for yours with a cab over camper. The twist link setup I mentioned is a great choice if you want a smoother ride quality and the V-bars part # TC4831 are great...
