Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Snow Chains

Installing these chains is simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in them.

Drape chains over tire.

2. Drape the chains over the tire.

Connect the chain behind the tire

3. On the back of the tire, pull the chain tight and hook the ends together. Repeat this on the side chain on the front of the tire, then clamp the lever to fasten extra chain links and keep them from flapping as you drive.

Tension cams

4. Insert the included tool into the cam and twist to tighten the sidewall chain. Twist as many cams as it takes to get a tight fit.

Attach optional tensioners

5. Drive forward and recheck tension. Tighten any loose cams.

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) can be used to help give you a tight fit. Make sure the hooks on the adjusters face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

THEY WORKED OUT PERFIT, I HAVE USED THEM TWICE. GOOD PEOPLE TO DEAL WITH.

The chain links broke off on both pairs on the first time using it. Also because I purchased the chains in the summer to prepare for winter I was told too much time elapsed and I couldn’t get my money back nor a free exchange. I was pissed to say the least. I definitely would not recommend these chains and if you’re going to purchase from this company make sure you purchase within the 30 days that you’re actually going to use the chains that way if anything goes wrong they’re within the time period to have something done about it.

These chains, like many like it, only have a 30 day warranty from the manufacturer. We do have replacement links but you would probably want an upgraded chain instead of trying to piece this one together. I would recommended something like item # TC2517 as they provide excellent traction in snow and ice and are more durable.

2001 Ford F-150

I was looking for tire chains for my 2001 Ford F150. I found etrailer online and found what I was looking for at a very fair price. I wasn't real clear on the exact part number I needed, so I used their chat function. The person on the chat was nice, efficient and pointed me to the correct set of chains. The order process was great, they were delivered in a very timely manner, packaged well. I haven't used the chains yet, kind of hope I don't ever need them, but I'm very confident they will work perfectly if I do. This will be the first place I look for any thing for my equipment in the future. Great products, great service, great price, what else could you ever want?

by:

Thanks for the rapid shipping. Your web site is the only one that lists the product (tire chains) to the wheel and tire size. That is great and and makes complete sense. Thanks a lot!

  • S-Class Tire Chains for Use on 2017 Nissan Pathfinder with 235/65R18 Size Tires
The online edition of the owner's manual for the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder indicates on page 8-32 that tire chains can be used only on tire size 235/65R18. If the vehicle has larger 235/55R20 tires then chains cannot be used. Nissan specifies that only low-profile S-Class chains can be used since these require less clearance within the wheel wells. If you have size 235/65R18 tires then you can use one of the S-Class tire chains shown on the linked page. For overall performance and value I...

  • Will the Titan Snow Tire Chains with Cams TC2229CAM Fit 265/70-16 Tires
The Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains with Cams part # TC2229CAM will not fit 265/70-16 tires because they are too small but I do have an option for you that will, the Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains with Cams part # TC2228CAM. The Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains with Cams are identical in design but the size is different with the latter being a bit larger. If you are looking to save some cash, the Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains part # TC2228 will also work and are the same as the Titan Chain Snow Tire...

  • Availability of Tire Chains For a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe With 235/60R18 Tire Size
You will first want to check your owners manual or with the Hyundai dealer to determine if you can use snow tire chains on your 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe, or if there are any limitations. Many newer vehicles require SAE Class S chains which mean the chain can be no larger than 15mm for side wall clearance on the vehicle. The sidewall clearance is needed so that the snow chains will clear any part of the vehicle that is close to the inner and outer sidewall of the tire. Most of the newer vehicles...

  • Tire Chain Recommendation for a 2005 Honda Odyssey with 235/65R16 Tires
The Glacier Tire Chains, # TC2229CAM, are listed as a fit for a 2005 Honda Odyssey with 235/65R16 tires. However, you will want to check a couple of things first before installing any chains. Start by turning the wheels to either all the way right or all the way left. Then measure the distance from the inside of the sidewall of the tire to the nearest part of the van on both sides. This is clearance that you cannot exceed with chains. You will also need to check the owners manual of the...

  • Tire Chains for a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe with All-Wheel Drive
Class S tire chains are chains that require less than 15mm of clearance between the chains and any part of the vehicle once the chains are installed. I checked the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe owner's manual and found that Class S chains are required. Also, on all-wheel drive models like yours the manual states to use chains on all 4 wheels. It looks like there were at least 3 stock tire sizes that could be on your Santa Fe. If it has 225/70-16 tires then for Class S Thule chains you can use...

  • Ladder Style Tire Chain Recommendation for 2007 Hyundai Tucson with Aftermarket Tires
The two stock tire sizes found on a 2007 Hyundai Tucson are 215/65-16 and 235/60-16, however you state that you have installed aftermarket tires sized 235/65-16 which are a bit wider. For that tire I recommend the Titan Chains # TC2229CAM chains with twisted links (good traction) and cam locks for easier installation, on a ladder pattern. These will work as long as you have a minimum of 1.46 inches of clearance between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well, and at least 0.59 inches...
