Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/ESP functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These chains are great for giving you a little extra traction in the snow. But if you live somewhere where you experience heavy snow often, you'll definitely want something more heavy duty than cables. Because these cable chains are lightweight and don't take up a lot of storage space, they are also perfect for keeping in your trunk if you occasionally travel through areas that require you to have chains on hand.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's user manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new cable chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow cables that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile cables can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Cable Chains

Installing cable chains is easy.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the cables.

Cross cable connections have a smooth side that goes against the tire

2. Where each cross cable attaches, you'll notice there is a smooth side and one with an edge. Make sure the smooth side faces in to sit against your tire's sidewall as you drape the cables over your tire.

Making connections behind and in front of the wheel

3. On the front of the tire, feed the cable through the connection loop until it's tight, then use the lever to keep the extra cable from flapping as you drive. Repeat this on the backside of the tire.

Rubber adjusters ensure a tight fit

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) are recommended to help ensure a tight fit. Connect these to the front side of the cable in a star pattern. Make sure the hooks face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Worked way better than the chains (Titan chain HD) I bought initially from etrailer. I have a 2021 F150 Platinum with the 20" tires and the chains would not stay on the treads no matter what I tried. Just tried these ladder cables in Tahoe and they stayed on the tires just fine. The only downside to these over the chains is that they aren't continuous in the tire so when the road is clear (no snow) they ride crazy rough. It's like driving over 1/2" diameter sticks spaced 1 ft apart down the road so it feels pretty bad. But they were effective in helping me drive up and down my access road that was covered in deep snow one day and ice another day, they got the job done and stayed in place. Oh, I also used them with a set of bungee tensioners from etrailer for full disclosure.

I am glad that these chains will fit your tire. I love your review, however I wanted to ask you a question. Typically, you would want to remove them when driving on bare pavement. Do you have them on all the time?

Michael

1/18/2023

Yes, definitely dont WANT to drive on clear pavement with them, but in California where there are chain controls you are forced to put them on for certain sections of road and sometimes those sections are only partially covered with patchy snow. So when you end up on hard pavement at times, its a rough ride with these. Alternatively, if you know you are heading from paved streets into some snowy side streets, you may want to put the chains on at a corner lot where its easier before heading into unplowed sections of road. That may also mean you drive a little bit on pavement before you get to the snowy parts.

2015 Nissan Titan

The cable chains fit my truck really well and are pretty simple to install. I purchased them for an upcoming trip up north for vacation. Not sure if I'll need them but don't want to be without them if I do. I'll prolly be giving 5 stars after I use them. The buying process and customer service and communication are great also.

I fit the cables to the tires and they're fine in that respect and they appear to be a good and stout. I did have trouble with the lever-lock. When the cables are tight the radius of the cables around the tire make it difficult to hook the lever-lock in the closed position due to the small gap between the "two hooks" on the lever-lock. With the cables matching the curve of the tire the cable does not fit easily between the two "hooks". It would seem just one "hook" would be sufficient as the tension is applied to the lever-lock in only one direction. I don't understand why there is a hook going the other way too. With a bit of deft filing I opened the gap enough to hook the lever-lock in position with much less difficulty. Without the alteration, working that lever-lock closed on a dark, freezing night would have been much less fun.

Thanks for sharing. Although, the warranty on the chains will not be effective once you have modified them and you can no longer return them, so I cannot recommend filing. At the 2:00 mark of this installation video it shows the installer having a bit of trouble putting the lever-lock onto the cable as you are saying.

This is the second time I've ordered cables from etrailer. First-time cables were damaged (I was driving 45-50 miles per hour on a somewhat icy road), but the last one I got served me well, as long as the speed is maintained to 35-45 mph, you are good

by:

Great service, ordering and getting them in. Haven't had to use them yet and hope I won't but tried them on the truck and the fit uus fine. The chains/cables looked made but the reason I am only giving 4 stars is the storage bags were bsrle able to fit the chains in from the factory. I just about had to peal the chains out and they are impossible to be rerolled and reinstated. I was able to fit them in empty sand bags. I just feel for that kind of money they could provide a better bag.

  • Are Snow Tire Chains Recommended On all 4 Tires on a 2010 Nissan Armada 4wd
For your 2010 Nissan Armada you could put tire chains on all four tires but it is not required. Normally snow chains are only required on the main drive wheels of your vehicle. For your Armada you need to install them on the rear tires. Your service department is giving solid advice. If you will be driving in extremely adverse road conditions, then two sets of the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains, item # PW3029C, one for the front tires also, would be a good idea too. From the sound of your question, I assume you meant the # PW3029C instead of "TC3029C." Also, it sounds like you have size 275/70-18 tires on your 2017 Ford F-350 Super Duty (single rear wheel). Per the Ford user's manual, I recommend only using Class S approved accessories. With that being said, if you want better traction and grip, I always recommend going with tire chains over cables. For this reason, I recommend the Titan Chain Cable Snow Tire Chains - Ladder Pattern - Steel Rollers...

  • Recommended Tire Chains for 2016 Chevy Suburban
Yes. The P at the front of your 275/55R20 tire size notation just means that they're tires for a passenger car and not a LT (light truck) or ST (special trailer), so they are the same sized tires. The reason they do not recommend using tire chains on your vehicle is the limited clearance in the wheel wells of your vehicle could create a situation where if a chain breaks, it can cause a great deal of damage to the suspension or braking components that are stored there. We do offer several tire chains that are designed to fit the tires on your 2006 Dodge Ram truck. Per the attached helpful article, tire chains are installed on the driving wheels, so if you have a 2-wheel drive truck, just use chains on the rear tires. If you have a 4-wheel drive truck, you can use chains on the front as well as the rear. • Low-Profile Cable Tire Chains For 2022 Ram 1500 With 275/70R18 Tires
There is a Class S compatible cable tire chain that fits the 275/70R18 tires on your 2022 Ram 1500, from Glacier chains: - Glacier Cable Tire Chains # PW3029C These require 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall (or any other obstruction) and your truck, and 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and your wheel well. To ensure they have a consistently snug fit I highly recommend tensioners, the Glacier Multi-Arm Tire Chain Tensioners for 16" to 19" Rims # PW105.

If you are concerned about internal clearances then you may want to consider a Class S chain like the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains - 1 Pair # PW3029C. These cable style chains are best used with a tensioning device like the Glacier Multi-Arm Rubber Adjusters # PW105.
