Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/ESP functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These chains are great for giving you a little extra traction in the snow. But if you live somewhere where you experience heavy snow often, you'll definitely want something more heavy duty than cables. Because these cable chains are lightweight and don't take up a lot of storage space, they are also perfect for keeping in your trunk if you occasionally travel through areas that require you to have chains on hand.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's user manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new cable chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow cables that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile cables can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Cable Chains

Installing cable chains is easy.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the cables.

Cross cable connections have a smooth side that goes against the tire

2. Where each cross cable attaches, you'll notice there is a smooth side and one with an edge. Make sure the smooth side faces in to sit against your tire's sidewall as you drape the cables over your tire.

Making connections behind and in front of the wheel

3. On the front of the tire, feed the cable through the connection loop until it's tight, then use the lever to keep the extra cable from flapping as you drive. Repeat this on the backside of the tire.

Rubber adjusters ensure a tight fit

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) are recommended to help ensure a tight fit. Connect these to the front side of the cable in a star pattern. Make sure the hooks face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Dodge Ram Pickup

I bought this product for my Ram truck to retrieve fire wood at the top of my snow covered mountain land. The snow was 6 inches deep, very dense, and mixed with layers of ice. The ascent was about 150 feet over a distance of 300 yards. All 4 tires were fitted with this product.

I was not able to accomplish my goal. The truck could not get the proper traction to navigate the hill. Without tramping hard on the gas, the tires just spun and dug holes to the stone lane surface. I can't fairly rate this product on it's performance because there may not be any tire chain that would have worked under these treacherous conditions.

However, after taking the cables off, I was unable to roll them up to get them back into the bags they were in. For that reason I give them a poor rating. I would love to see a video of someone trying to do this. My solution was to make a wooden spool for each pair on which I rolled them up for storage. The bags are too small, especially for one person. The manufacturer failed to provide an easy means for storage.

I haven't actually had a chance to test out the product, but the service was excellent. We needed chains at the last minute due to an unexpected snow storm for our planned trip to the mountains. I had an extremely difficult time finding chains for my Land Rover LR4, as they were sold out everywhere or $1000 from the dealer. I was able to get the chains I needed with expedited shipping just in time for our trip (we only had a couple of days!).

We were able to make it up and down the mountain with just 4 wheel drive, so I can't speak as to the product itself. But the service was superior!

Great Product. It was the right size for my tires. The chains worked as expected.
The only thing was that one broke wile i was driving. It didn't ripped of the tire or damage my vehicle, it broke from the loose ende where you adjust the chain so that it is tight to the tire. I don't know if it was the condition of the road or something else.
I still can use it on my truck but i don't think i can use it on a bigger tire size.

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

OK for the price. More junk from China. I bought these for our new Grand Cherokee because CA state law requires me to carry them whether I need them or not. (e.g. In 14 yrs of snow driving in our old Volvo AWD I never once opened the box of chains for that car and gave them away with the car). I do NOT expect to ever have to use these on our new Grand Cherokee either so I guess it doesn't matter much what I think of these... HOWEVER, I will just say that I was disappointed to find that these have no application chart provided with the chains. I have never bought a set of chains that did not give a semi-complete list of all applicable tire sizes. These only list 4 sizes (not mine) and then the "Made in China" tag simply states that there are also other sizes as well. etrailer only states that these are 'verified' to fit my car. If it ever were to really come down to it, I hope they do because there's no way I'm going to waste my time and energy 'trying' them on when I'm never going to need them anyway. I wanted the expensive Thule that Jeep recommends for our Cherokee and would have paid 3 times as much to know that I have the best but I also truly believe that it's very possible I would never use them so these cheap ones I will feel better about not keeping if I ever get rid of the car.

I liked the free shipping for purchases over $99. The products I ordered came in, on time and in great condition. Will definitely come back for future products.

This product works better than the thick chains. I bought some chains before this pair and i had to return then because they would hit my shocks. I would highly recommend this for anyone

  • What Works Better Snow Chains Or Snow Cables On A 2007 Nissan Frontier 4X4
Both of the snow chains and snow cables will work great in snow conditions. The difference is the snow chains will give you better grip in more ice conditions because the chain links will bite into the ice where as the snow cables tend to slide over the ice. The snow chains will make a little more noise on dry pavement as compared to the snow cables. The Pewag Tire Chains, # PWXMR81V, you have referenced is a good choice for snow chains on your 2007 Nissan Frontier 4x4. Another good choice...

  • Recommended Use of Snow Cables on 2013 Toyota Highlander AWD
When it comes to use of snow tire chains on a vehicle the auto maker always gets the final word. That said, often the language in owner's manuals is fairly ambiguous regarding use of tire chains since tire sizes can vary on a vehicle and that can have a significant impact on the sizes and types of chains that are permissible. The issue generally comes down to the amount of clearance within the wheel wells and if this is adequate to allow for a tire chain to fit without damage to brake...

I went by a 2013 Chevy Express Van and put it through our fit guide to find chains. There are two tire size options listed, 245/70-17 and 245/75-16. I will provide some recommendations for each size for you. First for the 245/70-17 if you plan on infrequent use then going with a set of cables, # PW3010C, with rubber adjusters # PW99 would be the way to go. Cables are great if you seldom need chains and/or live in an area where chains are not required by law. For frequent use and/or if...

  • How to Select Tire Chains for 2008 Honda Accord LX
I can think of no better illustration of the principle "you get what you pay for" than a set of tire chains. Tire chains differ substantially in their construction and features. In some cases the most basic no-frills chains will suffice if the intention is just to have some in the trunk to meet a legal requirement. But on the other hand, if for example you're a serious skier who travels to the slopes on a routine basis and you fully intend to install and use the chains on a frequent basis...

  • Comparing Tire Chains and Cables for 2016 Jeep Cherokee with Tire Size 245/65-17
Tire chains are the best for deep snow. Snow tires do a great job but there's nothing that works better in super deep snow than chains. Cables are basically a one-time use chain that's bargain priced. For your tire size of 245/65-17 the cable set part # PW3010C will work great to get you out of an emergency situation but if you plan to use chains more than a few times these won't hold up long enough to be a worthy investment. These are best for potentially one time use but mainly to get...

The ToolCat has a very aggresive tread pattern, so for a flat drive I would recommend working it without chains. For the best performance, I would recommend going with the Pewag All Square Tire Chains, # PWE3210SC, that you referenced. The square link chains have an edge that will help grip on ice and in heavy snow conditions. These will be likely to mark your drive some. The in between option is snow cables like Glacier # PW3010C. I suspect these will only give you a bit more traction...

  • Do Tire Chains or Cables Offer Better Traction and Which is Better
Actual tire chains are better than cables. Chains offer better traction and longer life. They also seem to be more corrosion resistant. Some chains are easier to put on that others. The same goes with cables but the cables are lighter. Cables are good for occasional use but if you need chains frequently then going with actual chains is preferred. Some vehicles require chains or cables that do not stick out from the tire very far because of limited clearance between the tire and vehicle....
