Video Transcript for Roadmaster Skid Wheels - Hitch Mount - RM-050 Review

Today, we're going to review part number RM-050. This is the Roadmaster Rollaway Trailer Hitch Protector. This part will prevent the trailer hitch on your vehicle from digging and dragging on pavement. It is a front-low design which will accommodate many hitches that other rollers will not fit.It is designed for trailer hitches that sit very close to the ground. It has a solid heavy-duty steel roller. When installed on your hitch receiver, this will work with or without a ball mount or a hitch accessory inserted into your hitch.

It does include the pin and the clip. A basic I want to give you an example of how this would insert into a trailer hitchI have an example here. This is a two-inch hitch receiver. Now, this rollaway part is designed for a hitch receiver that has a distance of 2 7/16 between the center of the hitch pinhole and the end of the face of your hitch receiver. At this distance, the support bar, which is right in here and on the bottom, will hold the rollaway tightly in place and level to the hitch receiver.

Now, if this distance on your hitch receiver is less than 2 7/16, there will be a gap between this bar and the hitch. If that gap is less than 1/8 of an inch, it will still work fine. Now, if that gap is more than 1/8 of an inch, you would have to weld shims onto to this or onto the hitch receiver to make it fit properly. What happens here is this would slide onto the front of your trailer hitch. As you can see, the hitch would lay into those support arms that are on there. If I run the pin through here, and as you can see how it lines up and lays in that support arm, this gap here, if there was ...

if that gap is more than 1/8 of an inch, you would have to weld shims on here to make it work correctly. If it's less than 1/8 of an inch, it would work fine. This part does come with the installation instructions which would pretty much mention all that I just talk to you about. That should do it for our review on part number RM-050.

These hitch rollers are a life saver - no more dragging and cutting asphalt any longer. This is my second purchase, first was on a 39 ft Canyon Star and now on a 30 foot VeraCruz. Roller does "NOT" interfere with the hitch.

by:

Item works perfectly in my steep driveway, keeps my waste pipe from dragging! Exactly what I needed!

After a year this addition continues to perform as expected. Has saved me several times. Highly recommend!

by:

I installed this on my Class C Motorhome, and it has been great! No more dragging the hitch across driveways and inclines. Highly recommend.

by:

Just what I needed to fix the rubbing of the trailer hitch.

by:

Worked like a charm. Take your time go slow. It does prevent bottoming out. I used on c class. Thank you

by:

Wish it was an about inch longer in height. Overall, nice fit and great quality.

by:

Looks like it will do the job. Five stars for eTrailer. Four for this product, which appears reasonably well made but with sloppy paint job.

by:

Nice solid, well built. But didn’t fix my problem, pulling out of my driveway slightly downhill , would still hit pavement and drag causing damage. Was hitting on the side brackets that hold wheel.

I checked and we do not have another product to offer that would provide a different solution.

by:

Fits Ford Transit 350HD. (RV) . Seems to be well built and can take a beating instead of truck undercarriage.

by:

This exactly what I was looking for. Installed without a Hitch! (Pun Intended!

Very well made, extra heavy duty, easy install and remove if needed. The fit for a 2” receiver is as advertised. I have a low spot when I enter the roadway where the hitch drags, this has fixed it. Looking forward to many years of severe.

It is a great product, it is doing what is was purchased for, my hitch no longer dragged the ground and because of the heavy duty design I expect to get a lifetime of use. Very pleased.

by:

The trailer hitch roller device fit perfectly the first time, no tools required and was done in less than 2 minutes. A high crown on the street caused my trailer hitch to gouge the pavement as I was backing out of my driveway. The roller works exactly as advertised and saves both the street pavement and the trailer hitch on the back of my 36 ft. class A motor-home.

by:

Installation could not be simpler, pull hitch pin, set it in place and slide in new longer pin. I now have piece of mind that I won't be damaging my tow bar or hitch going into some gas stations. I was thinking about bolting a Nylon skid plate to my hitch until a friend showed me the rollaway. Great device.

by:

Despite being cautioned that this device might not be strong enough to take the load created by the motorhome hitch dragging on steep entrance/exit inclines to gas stations or plazas etc, it has stood up well when entering or exiting slowly.

by:

We have a trailer hitch on the rear of our 32 foot 5th wheel (used primarily for bike rack) and it drags when we turn into our "sharp up-hill turn" driveway. This item is very sturdy and well made. Easy to install and fits well. Looks like it will take the pressure off the bottom of the hitch and prevent dragging. Will know after our next camping trip next month. E-trailer has always shipped promptly and items arrive well packaged and undamaged.

by:

I have not yet used the hitch skid wheel. I was however able to fasten on a 4 inch skid wheel around the hitch itself. I was then able to back my 5th wheel down the driveway with no issues!! Needless to say there was no to return those wheels!! I will also be keeping the hitch skid wheel JIC!! Thanks!!

by:

Performed fantastic! Protected my extended camper van from dragging on those low dips. Very easy to install on my Ford Transit 350.

by:

Did not fit hitch on my 2020 Ford Transit 350 chassis (2021.5 Pleasure-Way Ontour 2.2 RV) and they charge 22.64 to return it.

I will have our customer service team reach out to you. This is designed to fit most 2 inch hitches.

by:

This product works great protecting the bike rack on my RV.

by:

So far "As Advertised" only gave 4 starts due to no long term ability to see how it holds up over time. Without this device we would still be scrambling around on the ground to lay down 2x10 riser boards for my driveway. This has allowed us to pull our 36' Class A into our driveway.

by:

Product was shipped quickly, arrived in good condition, performs as advertised. etrailer personnel were extremely helpful answering questions when reached by phone. A good online commerce experience.

by:

Delivered as ordered, exact part and undamaged!
More
importantly it was delivered promptly, I had ordered the same part and Skirting from another retaier. it was ordered in June, we finally cancelled and ordered from etrailer, arrived days later. Thank you.

by:

Fits great. Haven't had occasion to use it yet but looks like just what I needed to keep from dragging my tail!

Ray R.

Very well! Wish it did not stick down so far.

by:

It arrived and was installed today. It looks like it will help with my motor home tail drag problem. Hopefully it will stand up to use.

by:

Easy order process and happy with shipping process.

  • Is the Roadmaster Rollaway Trailer Hitch Protector Heavy Duty Enough for Use on a 37 Ft Motor Home
Yes, the Rollaway Hitch Protector, # RM-050, should be plenty heavy enough to work on your 37 foot motorhome and keep the hitch from dragging when you back into your driveway, as long as the dip you have is not so deep that it is bending the hitch receiver or side plates. If your dip is so extreme that the hitch is bending, this type of item would only make the situation worse. To use the Rollaway Hitch Protector you will need to make sure that the support bar, see short video, is not...

  • Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier For a 2016 Mazda CX-5 With Rise To Prevent Dragging
I recommend the 20x60 etrailer Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches # e98874 for your 2016 Mazda CX-5. This carrier has an 2" rise to position the cargo carrier higher on your Mazda. This carrier only weighs 48lbs and can support up to 500lbs. If you notice it is the receiver on your Mazda that is contacting the ground you will want to try the Roadmaster Rollaway Trailer Hitch Protector # RM-050 that will roll on the ground rather than digging into it with the receiver.

For your 2 inch trailer hitch receiver, when utilizing the Roadmaster Rollaway Trailer Hitch Protector # RM-050, I don't believe the Stainless Steel Locking, Anti-Rattle Threaded Hitch Pin for 2" Trailer Hitches # SR25219 will fit and work properly. Instead, I recommend using the XL Anti-Rattle Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock for 2-1/2" Hitches - 3-1/2" Span # SHP2040-XL to meet your needs.

  • Recommended Solution for Dragging Hitch Receiver on 2002 Ford Van
The best solution for this is going to be the Roadmaster Rollaway Trailer Hitch Protector # RM-050, which will work when you're towing as long as whatever is in the receiver doesn't hang below the Rollaway. This is ideal because it doesn't require any welding on, so it's ready to be installed right out of the box and will keep your hitch from getting dinged up when ground clearance isn't the best. I've linked our review video of this part for you to check out.

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Scrape the Ground when Going Up Inclines with 2006 Honda Odyssey
Roller # RM-050 is a good option for a Class III trailer hitch on your 2006 Honda Odyssey. It does hang down lower than the hitch receiver so it will actually make contact with the ground sooner than if the roller were not on it. This roller will not help with the Kuat bike rack though. What might work better is to use # D210 and put the bike rack in the upper receiver. This will raise it up higher and keep it from scraping on the ground, even if the hitch does scrape.

  • Will the Ultra-Fab Steel Roller, # UF48-979020 Fit a Curt Trailer Hitch on a 2011 Toyota Sienna
The Ultra-Fab Steel Roller, # UF48-979020, is designed to fit Class III or higher hitches with a 2 inch receiver. However, in this case the safety chain loops on the Curt hitch for the 2011 Toyota Sienna will interfere with installation. I have tested the Roadmaster Rollaway, # RM-050, on a Curt hitch before and it is compatible. It also fits a Class III or higher hitch with a 2 inch receiver and has a 5/8 inch diameter hitch pin hole. You could use a bike rack with it.

The presence of the rear bumper would interfere with a hitch passing through it, all the hitches we offer are designed so that the receiver tube sits below the rear bumper. Great question. I honestly can't recall ever seeing a hitch protector like the Roadmaster Rollaway # RM-050 that is designed specifically for 1-1/4" hitches, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. While it won't be a perfect fit, I don't see any reason that you can't use the Roadmaster Rollaway on your 1-1/4" hitch to accomplish your goal of keeping the hitch from dragging when coming out of your driveway. • Will the Roadmaster Rollaway Trailer Hitch Protector Work With a Gen Y Hitch
The Roadmaster Rollaway Trailer Hitch Protector, # RM-050 will most likely work with your hitch but you will need to take a few measurements for confirmation. You will need to measure on the center of the hitch pin hole of your Gen Y hitch to the face of the hitch. We are needing 2-7/16 inches. This designed for the support bar to seat firmly against the bottom of the hitch. If you have a gap, adjustments can be made but most hitches meet this measurement. Please see the attached product...

I spoke with my contact at Roadmaster, and it is possible that the Rollaway trailer hitch protector # RM-050 will work with your Valley trailer hitch, but they could not guarantee this. The most important determining factor would be whether the safety chain tabs come out below the hitch, or if they come off the sides. If the tabs come off the sides, you would most likely not be able to install the trailer hitch roller, but you should be able to install it if the tabs come down below the hitch.
