Video Transcript for Curt Gooseneck Trailer Hitch Review

Jake: Hey guys, it's Jake here with etrailer today. We're going to be taking a look at two different Curt products, but they're going to accomplish the same thing. We're going to be looking at the curd spider and the Curt drop-in plate. Both of them are going to be a gooseneck conversion for your fifth wheel rails that are already in your bed.Now what I like about this is let's say you have a fifth wheel camper that you go camping with for the past couple of years. And you decide that you want to either haul a gooseneck trailer because you got a side project coming up or something like that, but you don't want to take out your bed because you still like going camping. This is designed to help you haul goosenecks in the proper way, by just utilizing the rails that are already in your bed.The first difference is going to be that our safety chain loops on our spider are going to be on the front and they're going to be spring-loaded, just like our standard ones are on your regular goosenecks.

Can be spring-loaded, pull it out, hook your safety chain on there, and you're ready to go. The ball is another area of concern. So the gooseneck ball on our spider is going to sit directly in the center of our two rails. It's also going to sit from the bottom of the spider to the top of the ball, is going to be about seven and a half inches. Let's go ahead and take a look at the Curt plate for gooseneck adapter and show you the difference.

With our Curt plate. You can see that our safety chain loops are incorporated in the plate itself. You just simply hook your safety chain hooks onto these loops, and it's going to be safe to travel down the road. You're going to notice that our ball is going to be slightly offset either to the front or the rear. We can flip this plate around depending on what kind of vehicle that we're towing it with. If we have a long bed, it's not really going to matter which configuration you use it for.

You are going to be able to use it with the ball facing the cab, or more towards the cab. And if you have a short bed truck, which you can do, is you can take the whole plate and have these handy little grip slots that you can put your hands so you don't smash it in between the bed and the sides of our plate. Simply lift it up, spin it around, set it down, and you can see very easily. We just gained about six inches back and neither of our balls are going to be in the center of our two rails. So this is going to give us that extra cab clearance that we need for the nose of our trailer, if you're hauling it in a short bed. The biggest difference between the two gooseneck adapters I'll have to say is going to be the height of your ball.

The height of our ball on our gooseneck plate here is going to be only from the top of your rails to the top of the ball is only going to be about four and a half inches. So you can tell the difference between the sheer size of our spider and our plate is that you're going to gain about three inches if you're using the spider. Whereas if you don't want to have to adjust your coupler on your trailer, or if you can't adjust it enough, we've gotten a lot of reviews that say that they cannot put their coupler any further up inside their gooseneck hitch. So they're going to have to go with the plate because the spider was simply too tall. They couldn't adjust their trailer to the right height to haul it level. Both the hitch adapters are going to install the same way; simply lift it up and drop it into place. Both the spider and the gooseneck plate are going to come with four pins so that you don't have to rely on your pins from your fifth wheel to be able to get it locked into place. Both of the hitches are going to have the same weight capacities. It's going to have a 25,000 pound gross towing weight and a 6,250 pound tongue weight. Both of these hitches are going to have a carbide black powder coat, which is going to be stronger than just your standard powder coat. You're not going to have to worry about it, shipping or flaking, and then potentially rusting your hitch. With that being said, the hitch is made of a sturdy steel construction. And it will say Curt did a very good job of making this out of a very thick quarter inch steel. So when it comes down to it, they're both going to be made out of the same materials. The spider is going to be a little bit heavier and bulkier to put down into place, and it's going to stick up higher, as we went over. They're both going to feature a 2 5/16 ball. So you're not going to have to worry about them being different in that aspect. What it's really going to come down to is what are you using it for And what are you using it with If you have a short bed truck and you have a camper that you're towing with this and that your camper has a gooseneck coupler on it, or maybe you have a horse trailer that has a larger nose, and you'd like a little bit more space for the cab of your truck to have some more clearance. I would definitely go with the Curt plate. If you have a long bed truck, or you have a short bed truck, but you're just hauling a trailer with a simple gooseneck coupler on it, and you don't have any clearance issues. Then I'd go with the spider.

The quality, durability and craftsmanship of the Curt Spyder Gooseneck Trailer Hitch for Fifth Wheel Rails is excellent and as advertised. Shout out to Etrailer.com for their excellent customer service and timely order fulfillment.

by:

I really like the convenience of this interchangeable hitch. I have the fifth wheel hitch and the goose neck hitch.

by:

Had to hit one of my rails with a 2 lb sledge just a fuzz to let the tab drop in. The locking tabs are a good idea for the pins. I put my late grandfather’s old classic padlock from his jon boat on one of the tabs. A little nostalgia.

Good quality easy installation

I received the hitch in a short amount of time. It fit perfectly on my fifth wheel rails. I towed a tractor the next day and it worked great. I am very pleased with the product.

it fit our Reese 5th wheel hitch rails perfectly. We hooked our gooseneck 4 horse trailer to it and it pulled just fine.

I ordered the Curt Spider Gooseneck Hitch and the Wire Harness for my 2020 f250. WOW is all I can say!!! It was delivered to my door less than 20 hours. The hitch is of great quality and I can not wait to put it to work. I will continue to do business with eTrailer.

by:

Great purchase as it has performed perfectly. Allows me to switch between my 5th wheel hitch and gooseneck as needed. Others that have seen it have been impressed also.

I have used this a great amount of time in the last year. It has been a real blessing and has so much flexibility for us to switch between 5th wheel to goose-neck tow modes. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to have the ability to switch back and forth between 5th wheel and goose-neck.

by:

This system allows for easy change from gooseneck to fifth wheel with just 4 pins.

by:

Simple enough. Does the job. Some movement compared to a solid frame mounted gooseneck.

by:

I have 2 curt 20k fifth wheel hitches. Both slip into the bedrails perfectly. This curt goosneck hitch did not fit the rails perfectly. I had to grind the feet to fit in the rail slot. Other than that it works as expected

I have gotten in contact with the manufacturer and they have confirmed that the 16085 should just into the rails just like the fifth wheel. The 16085 could have been bent, the unit should measure 22” front to back on the pin holes. Do you have any pictures of the fit on this as well?

by:

Looks great, super beefy, dropped right into my fifth wheel rails ,great looking welds, quality construction

by:

I bought this gooseneck Hitch back in 2016 I can't say I've used it everyday of the week but I do use it pull a cattle trailer occasionally and I've used it to pull 20,000lbs of silage bales out of the field and it's held up great no stress points or anything showing paint has held up great. It's a very heavy built hitch I would deffenitly recommend it to anyone that has the rails in there truck and is doin pretty stressful towing. It also sits the trailer up a lil higher and I love that really helps with twisting and turns.

by:

I installed this in minutes and it is just what I needed because my travel trailer fits over this hitch at same time so I always have this hitch in truck. It looks good to me also. It is a solid made product so I have no Cons for this unit. I would recommend this for any one that does not want to change his fifth wheel rail type mounts to the expenses hid away hitch to use a goose mount hitch.

by:

Received my hitch in just a few days, haven’t used it yet. I’m glad products like this exist so I can hook up to a gooseneck. I chose this one because I have curt rails and I like the spring loaded safety chain loops.

by:

Well built and arrived when promised. Fit like a glove, on the rails of my 20 year old F250. If the finish holds up like the Curt bed rails have, I’ll be very plesased

by:

This procuct works just like i would expect. easy install and works great

by:

Excellent so far. And a good price

by:

I have a fifth wheel hitch already and needed to tow Gooseneck trailers. Was able to use fifth wheel base and mount Gooseneck hitch right to it. Works great.

by:

VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE HITCH, AS WAS THE GUY THAT I BOUGHT THE GOOSE NECK TRAILER FROM. I TOLD HIM ABOUT ETRAILER AND HOW GOOD YOUR SERVICE WAS AND PRICES. AND AS ALWAYS THE SHIPPING WAS FAST! THE THING WEIGHS ALOT! I AM GUESSING THAT THE LEGS ARE SOLID STEEL!

by:

Sturdy built product. Didnt exactly fall into my rail slots but a few whacks with the BFH while standing on it and it aligned.
Great option for getting a gooseneck ball in truck bought with fifth wheel rails compared to putting whole new ball hitch in. Ordered 2-24 arrived 2-26.

by:

THE SPYDER GOOSENECK HITCH WAS RECEIVED FROM ETRAILER VERY QUICKLY. IT ONLY TOOK 5 MIN. TO INSTALL. FIT LIKE A GLOVE. PUT IN PINS AND GOING TO PULL MY 33 FT. CAMPER SOON.

by:

I have been an E trailer customer for over 8 years now. I was not surprised when my hitch showed up ahead of schedule and installed with ease. Great work from a great company.

  • What is Trailer Overhang Width When Determining if Trailer Has Clearance to Make Tight Turns
Basically I was referring to the width of the goosneck trailer nose. So measure the width of the trailer at the very front. This is the formula you referenced though. To determine if you can safely make tight turns, there is a formula you can follow. Measure the distance from the center of the gooseneck ball to the back of the truck cab. Call this measurement A. Next, measure the width of the trailer overhang and divide by 2 to get half, measurement B. If A is 4 inches or more than B...

You can tow your gooseneck trailer with your truck that has 5th wheel hitch rails already, but you can't install a separate in-bed gooseneck hitch; reason why is the brackets for a gooseneck and 5th wheel rails occupy the same spot under your truck. So what you can do instead is add a gooseneck that attaches directly to your 5th wheel rails: - Curt Spyder Gooseneck Trailer Hitch for Fifth Wheel Rails # 16085 The # 16085 will fit right on your 5th wheel rails and give you a gooseneck ball...

  • Can Short Bed Trucks Tow Gooseneck Trailers
The one really big downside to gooseneck towing is that there isn't a great solution for short bed truck clearance unlike fifth wheel towing. With fifth wheel hitches you can use a slider hitch and have the clearance issue handled. With gooseneck towing there isn't really anything you can do. The only way it's possible is if the nose of the gooseneck trailer is tapered to help with the turning clearance. The Spyder part # 16085 does fit industry standard fifth wheel rails like you have...

I may have an option for you, but the number you mentioned did not cross reference to any 5th wheel rails. It is likely that the Husky 5th wheel rails you have are industry standard rails since they are being used with a different brand hitch, and you can check by measuring your rails and comparing them to the included diagram of industry standard rails. Assuming that you have industry standard rails on your 2017 Ford F-250 with the 6-3/4' bed there are quite a few 5th wheel hitch options,...

The slots in the # C16022 puck adapter are 20-1/2 inches apart, center to center, which is the same spacing that the Curt # 16085 Spyder gooseneck trailer hitch uses, but the angled uprights used on the # C16022 adapter would prevent the # 16085 from installing on the adapter.
