Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area on the driver's side and passenger's side. You will have to remove the rear threshold and some interior lining to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in your trunk.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Review of Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - HM11141374

Hello, neighbors. I'm Steven here with etrailer.com. Today we're looking at this Hopkins plug-in wire harness with the four-pole flat trailer connector. Now, folks, this is a custom-fit application. Please be sure to double check our fit guide at etrailer.com. Go to the top center of the page where it mentions vehicle information, car information, something of that nature.

Enter your year, make, and model. Make sure you're getting the right parts for your vehicle the first time. Now, folks, this will provide a nice four-way flat trailer connection, or a four-pole, as some people call it, at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer's turn signals, taillights, those kind of things. It is compatible technically with five, six, and seven-pole adapters. Those could be purchased separately here at etrailer.com.

It really truly is a simple, fast, easy connect to install. So you've got these plugs here. You've got a set for the left turn signal, and a set for the right, brake lights, et cetera. So your taillight, you'll unplug a factory plug, something that looks like one of these. You'll plug this in to the back of the taillight or that one, again, depending on which one matches up.

And then you'll plug in the one that's left, the plug that you unplugged from the taillight, back into this T connector. So, again, it's a T, letter T, you unplug the light, plug it in, it finishes the connection. It doesn't get simpler than that, right Besides that, you're gonna take this red wire, you're gonna run it all the way up to the battery with an inline fuse. You're gonna make sure it's getting power at the battery. You've got some dielectric grease, zip ties to fasten the wires in place whenever you're running 'em.

A nice dust cover for the four-pole wire connection. And at the back of the vehicle, you're gonna have this self-tapping screw. And this ground wire here, you're gonna ground that on the frame. And then you're gonna have this pulse modulator, they call it, or electric power converter. What this does is it's gonna directly avoid overloading your vehicle's electrical system. It's gonna send out the right amperage, that kind of stuff, and it's gonna convert the signal needed to that of the trailer, and it's gonna just keep everything nice, safe, and secure for you as far as your wiring. In case you're wondering, the max amperage on the stop and turn lights is three amps per circuit, while you got six amps per circuit on the taillights. Now, folks, once this installation is complete, this does get stored in a nice out of the way area in your trunk. So that being said, yes, every time you need to use this, you would take this wire, you would come out of the trunk with it. You would close the trunk, and yes, it's got protection on here, so that way it doesn't get damaged. But also keep in mind the gasket on your trunk, when it's closed, and much like your doors in your vehicle, it's got almost an inch of give, so you don't have to worry about it cutting or crimping the wires in any way, shape or form. Well, folks, that's gonna wrap it up for our look at this Hopkins plug-in wire harness. I'm Steven, thank you for your time. Thanks for watching and have fun while you're installing.
