Video Transcript for Reese Fifth Wheel King Pin SWW-03 Review

Speaker 1: We're gonna take a look at the 5th Airborne Custom Wedge for the Reese and Draw-Tite Select Series 5th Wheels. Now a 5th wheel wedge is a simple but reliable way to allow a 5th wheel hitch to be used with a 5th wheel sidewinder pin box. This custom wedge bolts in place to the universal wedge on the pin box and it'll provide a new pivot point for the king pin and wider turn radius for the 5th wheel trailer. So to keep the pin box from swiveling at the 5th wheel hitch head, this custom wedge is mounted to the pin box. It'll insert into the hitch head, and it locks the pin box into place. Since the pivot point is then moved toward the rear of your tow vehicle you can easily make 90 degree turns, even with a short bed truck. Now, this 5th wheel wedge is designed to fit the Reese and Draw-Tite Select Series 5th wheels, and it'll accommodate the Sidewinder or the 5th Airborne Sidewinder pin boxes. If you notice, it has a nice, durable carbide black powder coat finish on it to help resist corrosion.

It includes everything shown here, the wedge and the mounting bolts to install it. But that should do it for the review on the 5th Airborne Sidewinder Custom Wedge for Reese and Draw-Tite Select Series 5th Wheels.

Got this as I found the generic wedge supplied with the Sidewinder was making it hard to hitch up/uncouple. Would not easily go into the Reese hitch or release the pin as easily as the regular pin box. This wedge helped, but still find hook up/uncoupling to be harder than before I switched to the sidewinder. Need to be very straight onto hitch when backing up or uncoupling.

by:

This wedge has a better fit with my Reese hitch than the universal wedge. Works great with my Sidewinder hitch. Strong.

by:

This product allowed me to couple and decouple my truck from in a matter of minutes compared with the twenty it took me with the universal wedge that was originally supplied with my sidewinder kingpin. Great product, no issues and excellent delivery from etrailer

by:

I have always had great service from etrailer, have not installed hitch yet but all packaging was in good shape and all parts and hardware are included. If I have any problem I'm sure the people at etrailer will be there as they have been with my orders in the past.

by:

It does the job for my Reese 5th wheel hitch

by:

I replaced the original wedge from the Sidewinder. This wedge is working a little better than the original, however it still requires some precision when hooking up.

by:

Great product and great customer service.
Our
hitch came with the generic wedge. What a pain to unhook.
Contacted etrailer and within 24 hours had an answer to my question. Thank you Chris

Good product and great service with Etrailer staff, but this wedge did not fit, easy return.

Product worked better than the Universal wedge. Had to loosen it up a little to get the right catch. Then sick it down!

  • What Wedge Do I Need For My Reese Revolution Pin Box And Sidewinder 16K Hitch
Yes, the # SWW-03 wedge is the correct wedge to use with your Reese Revolution pin box and your Reese 16k 5th wheel hitch. I confirmed this with a representative at Reese and they also suggested some maintenance tips that you can do to keep your hitch in working order. They suggested that you lubricate the hitch. To do so, you need to take the head off, put it upside down and spray it with white lithium grease. they said to also spray the jaws, wedge and king pin to keep everything moving...

  • Can a 5th Wheel Trailer be Towed with a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 with 5 Foot 7 Inch Bed
Towing a fifth-wheel trailer with a 2010 Dodge Ram Pickup with 5 foot 7 inch bed is definitely possible. Beds shorter than 6 feet require the addition of a Sidewinder replacement pin box for the fifth-wheel trailer you will be towing. To select the correct Sidewinder pin box, see link, you will need to determine the manufacturer and model number of the pin box on your trailer. Once you have selected a trailer and Sidewinder, you will need to install a stationary 5th wheel hitch in the...

The Reese Revolution is exactly what you need to haul a fifth wheel when using a truck with a 5-1/2 foot bed like your 2020 Ford F-150. So what you want is fixed hitch like the # RP30047 and a custom rail kit for your truck like the Reese part # RP50087-58 and you'll be in very good shape with the Reese Revolution. Only other thing you'd want is a custom wedge part # SWW-03 which is designed for the # RP30047 with a Revolution pin box. The SWW-03 is the component that keeps the pin box...

  • Can a 2020 Ram 2500 with Rambox Tow Fifth Wheel Trailer
There is a way to to a fifth wheel trailer with your 2020 Ram 2500 that has the Ramboxes but you have to install a Sidewinder pin box on the trailer so that the pivot point is raised up high enough that there isn't interference between the pin box and the truck bed rails when turning. If you check out the picture I attached you can see what I mean. Sidewinders like the # RP3FR are pin box specific so you will first need to know what pin box you have now in order to pick out the correct...

  • Custom Sidewinder Wedge for a Curt Q16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch
The correct wedge for a Sidewinder or 5th Airborne Sidewinder pin box and a Curt Q16 5th wheel hitch is # C16992. The wedge that is included with the pin box is the universal wedge and it is not always the best fit. It is possible that it moved but regardless I recommend using the custom wedge # C16992 with the Curt Q16 hitch for the best fit. Considering the forces and weights involved the trailer could have caused the wedge to move since the fit is not as good with the universal wedge...

  • How to Tow Fifth Wheel Trailer with 2018 RAM 2500 w/ Ram Box and Air Suspension
The only way you can safely tow a fifth wheel trailer with a Ram truck that has a Ram Box is with a Sidewinder pin box replacement as the pin box would no longer swing to the sides in the truck bed and hit the narrower bed rails. Sidewinders are pin box specific so you will first need to know what pin box you have now in order to pick out the correct one. There should be a sticker or a stamping on the OEM pin box of the trailer that will list the pin box number that is on the trailer. Once...

  • 16k Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommended for Use with Reese Revolution Pin Box
The Curt Q series of fifth wheel hitches cannot be used with Reese Revolution or Sidewinder pin boxes because the jaws are too wide on the hitch. I spoke with my contact at Reese to confirm this. One option would be to go with the E16 hitch you referenced part # C16115 and then the wedge part # RP64FR. Or for a hitch more similar to the Q16 in features I would go with the Reese 16k Fifth Wheel part # RP30047. This has a 2 jaw system as the Q16 so it would provide a smoother ride quality...

  • Best Cushioned Pin Box for 116 Lippert to Provide Turning Clearance
The absolute best replacement pin box for giving you more turning clearance and cushioning the ride quality is the Reese Sidewinder 5th Airborne part # RP61412 but with this you have to use a fixed fifth wheel hitch and not an automatic sliding hitch. So you'd need a hitch like the fixed Reese # RP30047 with the wedge # SWW-03 and you'd be set. The Sidewinders move the pivot point back 22-1/2 inches which will give you quite a bit more clearance than you have.

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch and Rail Kit for 2018 Ford F-150 5-1/2 bed for Use with Sidewinder
Sidewinders really are a great solution for towing with a short bed truck since you don't have to use a slider hitch. But for trucks with shorter than 6 foot beds like your 2018 Ford F-150 they are one of only a few viable options since even the standard slider hitches would not provide enough clearance. So for a fifth wheel hitch you'd need to go with a fixed hitch like the Reese # RP30047 and a custom fifth wheel rail kit like part # RP50087-58. The custom rail kits are definitely the...

Yes, the Reese Revolution pin box of the trailer you mentioned is designed to allow trucks with beds as short as your 5-1/2 foot bed the needed turning clearance. You'd need a rail kit and a fixed hitch and you'd be set. For a custom fifth wheel rail kit confirmed as a fit for your 2010 Chevy Silverado 1500 5-1/2 foot bed the Reese kit part # RP50064-58 is confirmed as a fit and will work well. • How Much Clearance is Normally Needed Between Truck Bed and Trailer Pin Box
Based on the numbers you mentioned there isn't going to be a safe way to tow the trailer as it's going to be way too low. You'd have bed rail issues and a trailer with the nose way too high. I'd double check the measurement you mentioned. Make sure the trailer is totally level and on level ground. For reference you want to have at least 6 inches between the overhang of the trailer and the top of the truck's bed rails when the trailer is level. Most hitches are around 16 inches tall from...

The other thing is just reconfiguring how you load the trailer that would put more weight at the front and help give you a bit more pin weight. Repositioning the propane tanks to the front should help a bit, as well. To protect the bed of your truck you may simply need to adjust the height of your sliding hitch to give you more clearance above your bed. However, it may be more complicated than that as well. There is one secure way to ensure your bed is protected, but it requires changing your pin box and your hitch. The sides of your pin box would collide with the top of the bed sides during turns beginning when the trailer is about 40-45 degrees to the truck, which is not very far. Reese has heard reports that using a Sidewinder replacement pin box that locks the pin box together with the fifth wheel hitch and moves the point of rotation 22 inches rearward will allow folks with flareside...
