Installation of Hayes Brake Controller Adapter

To install your Hayes electric brake controller, you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain auto manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, in which the wiring is run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Usually when this is done, a port is installed at your dash so that you can easily plug in a brake controller.

This adapter plugs into the 6-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

No hardwiring is required to install this adapter. After you plug it into the factory port, you simply plug the other end of the adapter directly into your electric trailer brake controller. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time to transfer it to another vehicle or securely stow it away.

Video Transcript for Hayes Syncronizer Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Hi, Matt with etrailer. Today, we're gonna be talking about the Hayes Synchronizer Trailer Brake Controller on the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. So what a brake controller does is when you press down on your brakes in your vehicle, this is gonna send a signal all the way back to your trailer that has electric brakes on it, then press its brakes. Now, today, we have a time delayed one, so that's not gonna be like our proportional brake controllers. How it differs is a proportional brake controller, when you press down on the brakes, if you press down hard, it's gonna press down hard on your trailer's, and if you press down light, it's gonna press down light on your trailer brakes. While this is gonna work a little bit differently, and it's not gonna provide you as smooth of a ride.

Also, how a time delay works, as the name states, it is delayed, so after a few seconds, then your brakes will be applied. How much depends on how much you adjust this gain feature. If I push this all the way up, it's gonna apply the max amount of trailer brakes to your trailer, and if you push it all the way down, it's gonna apply the least amount of brakes to your trailer. With the Synchronizer in particular, it's gonna be used for one to two axles on your trailer, which I think is a great fit for the Silverado 1500. Since this is one of our smaller Silverados, I don't see the need to maybe haul anything over two axles, but that's also gonna depend on what you are hauling.

We're also gonna have an manual override feature on the brake controller, it's gonna be this button here. And if I push down on it, that's gonna apply the brakes to our trailer. That's gonna mean, in cases, if maybe your trailer's swaying a little bit and you just wanna slow down and kinda control how your trailer's functioning, then this is gonna be a great way to fix that. Overall, I think this is gonna be a very economic option for the Silverado. Now, if you want something that's gonna be a little bit more premium, I'd actually recommend the Hayes Energize III.

It's gonna perform very similar to this one, only it's gonna have proportional braking, which is gonna provide you more of a smooth and safe ride. Now, how it fits into our vehicle, it's gonna be a little bit more bulky, but not too big. It's just gonna attach right to this panel here. And a lot of times, I like to put it on the right hand side. So if you are a taller person, you might bump your knee on this, so that's something to definitely think about.

But with how spacious the Silverado is, I don't think that's gonna be an issue. As for installing it, I found it to be pretty straightforward, not too bad, pretty simple. But if you do need a hand with that, just stay tuned, and we'll show you how to do that. To start off, we wanna make sure we have our brake controller and our adapter, so we can hook up to our factory plugins. So to access it underneath, we're just gonna come over here, and you'll see we have these other plugins. There's gonna be a lot of different colors, but if you go up further by your brakes, we're gonna have this other plugin. It's also gonna be the same color as this one, gray. And if we just push on this tab and pull out, we're gonna pull out this kinda plugin protector. This is gonna look exactly the same as the one we have. If it does, you know you're gonna be on the right track. What this does is just kinda protects your plugin from getting any dust in it. Now, we're just gonna reach up there and plug in our connectors. (connector clicking) You'll hear it click into place. Now, we can grab our brake controller plug and connect it to this connector over here. And you'll hear it click into place like so, and we should have power. You can check that just by pushing on this knob here. The lights up, you know you're good. Next up, you're gonna wanna mount this bracket over to this panel. I'd recommend checking if there's anything behind the panel, so you don't damage anything. So in our case today, we're gonna put it right here, and we're also using an adhesive to secure it onto the panel instead of the screws and bolts provided, since this is just a test fit. Now, once you have it there, then you can mount your brake controller to it. When installing it onto your bracket, I'd recommend just kinda pre-drilling a hole in it just to make things a little bit easier. In my case, I used a socket wrench to kinda help cinch things down. And now that that's ready, I can just take it over here, line it up with that hole, and mount it. And what's nice about this one is this can actually be mounted at any angle and any direction, just make sure that you can see that red light there. And the last thing I'd recommend doing is just grabbing these cords at the bottom, so that they're out of your way, and just pushing them up here, and securing them down with maybe a zip tie, because you don't want that hanging down in front of your pedals. And that will do it for the install and a look at some of the features of the Hayes Synchronizer on the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
