Kuat Hitch Bike Racks Review - 2015 Subaru Outback Wagon

Adam: What's going on, everybody Adam here with etrailer. Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 on our 2015 Subaru Outback. The color you see now is gray, but it comes in two other colors, black and pearl, so just pick whichever one is going to go best with your vehicle. This one's a two inch hitch, but all the other colors are going to come in an option of an inch and a quarter as well. We're going to get 40 pounds per bike with the Sherpa. So it's going to be great for all your road bikes and especially good for your carbon fiber frame bikes, just because we do have a little wheel hook here, so we're not going to be putting any stress on our frame. This isn't going to be a bike rack if you have some fat tire bikes because the wheel cradles are only going to accept a wheel with up to three inches in width. more

Thule Hitch Bike Racks Review - 2015 Subaru Outback Wagon

Zach: Hey everybody, Zach here at etrailer.com. Today, we're taking a look at the Thule Helium hanging style bike rack on our 2015 Subaru Outback wagon. This is going to be a really nice upgraded hanging style bike rack. What I like about hanging styles is they're a little bit more affordable, even for a higher end version like this one, but it gives us a little bit better ground clearance with our bikes, so we don't have a big platform hanging out. Now the downside to hanging style is it gets a little bit more crowded. The nicer frames, carbon frames, those aren't ideal for hanging style because one, you're putting a lot of pressure on the frame, but two, they're close and you might scratch them. more

Thule Hitch Bike Racks Review - 2015 Subaru Outback Wagon

Today on our 2015 Subaru Outback Wagon we're going to be test fitting the Thule T2 Classic two bike platform rack for 2" hitches, part number TH9044. We already have a bike installed on the rack. Let's go ahead and take a closer look and show off some of the features. Our first and most prominent feature is the fact that this can tilt away from the vehicle with the bike still attached. To do that we'll come up to the front here and pull this pin so once we release this lever it actually will go all the way down. Then, releasing the lever, holding onto the bike rack, we'll let it come down like so, and now we have full access to our rear hatch and plenty of space on either side to get what we need. We'll lift it back up into position, like so, and then reinstall that pin. How this bike is actually attached to the rack, we'll have two points of contact and no frame contact at all. more

Today, on our 2015 Subaru Outback Wagon, we're going to be test fitting the Swagman Dispatch 2 Bike Platform Rack for 2" Hitches, Part Number S64684. We already have a bike installed on the rack, let's go ahead and take a closer look and show off some of the features. The bike itself is gripped to the bike rack by 3 points. We have a padded frame hook up at the top, and it's padded to make sure your bike doesn't get scratched up once it's being installed. Then we have these wheel straps on either wheels. Now the wheel cradles are adjustable on the arms of the rack by loosening and tightening the knobs here. They're adjustable to assist with fitting different size bikes as well as just fitting bikes in general onto the rack. The bike rack itself does have a raised shank here, so clearance is not going to be an issue between the bike rack and the ground no matter how low your hitch sits. more

Now the most prominent feature of this bike rack is the fact that this can tilt away from the vehicle with the bike still attached to give rear hatch access. This is pretty unique for a hanging style bike rack. To do that we have this black handle on the passenger side of the mast. You pull that out like so, let it tilt forward, and now we have rear hatch access to get whatever we need. It is far enough away that we have plenty of space on either side to do so. We will just push this back up into its original position until you hear that click. Now, how this is actually held in place, we are going to have to rubber straps up at the top to hold it down. more

Now you have access to your rear hatch to get whatever it is you need with plenty of space on both sides. Today on our 2015 Subaru Outback Wagon we're going to be doing a test fit of the Yakima Full Tilt Hanging Style 4-Bike Rack, part number Y02462. If you look up here, you'll see we already have our bike in place, and that's so you can see what it would look like once you have the cradle arms extended and everything in place as well as your bike. Let's start off by getting a few measurements. Our closest distance will be first, and that's going to be from this spot here to the back side of the bumper, at about 4 1/2 inches. Our overall distance that we've added to the vehicle, to the rear of the cradle arms here from the bumper, is going to be about 36 inches, and our ground clearance, from the bottom side of the tensioner and fin here, at about 10 1/2 inches. Now let's move up top and talk about the straps. You're going to have your zip strips that are going to be securing the frame of your bike in place. You'll have two on top which are going to act as your frame straps and then you're going to have the one on the side where your down-tube is for your seat post. more

As you can see we've already got our bike up here and in place so you can see what it would look like once you have yours all the way fully extended and with a bike on it. It does come with that nice design where it's going to offer the most stability for two large bikes and two small bikes if you have children's bikes as well, or it's going to be good for all four of the same bikes. But it's just going to come with that shorter cradle arms up top to do so. Now that we got that, let's go ahead and move down and we're going to talk about a few measurements first. Our first measurement is going to be down here on the front side where our shortest distance is. That's going to be from the front of the T-handle bracket to the back side of the bumper. more
