Yakima HoldUp Hitch Bike Racks Review - 2015 Subaru Outback Wagon

Today on our 2015 Subaru Outback, we'll be doing a test fit on the Yakima HoldUp Platform-Style 2 Bike Rack. That's part number Y02443. I've already got it loaded up on the Outback just to give you a good idea of what it looks like and how it holds our two bikes. It actually holds our bikes with zero frame contact. We have this wheel hook going over our front wheel putting down pressure into the front wheel cradle, and then for the rear we have a strap going over the rear wheel and it rackets down into place, so that's going to be nice and tight. One of the best features about this bike rack is it has ability to tilt away from our vehicle so we can gain access to our rear hatch. Go ahead and make your way over to the center pin here, pull out, and then we can get into our rear hatch. more

We already have a bike installed on the rack, let's go and take a closer look and show off some of the features. The first feature I'd like to show off is the fact that it has an integrated cable lock in the center of the mast. You pull this out of the mast, wrap it around your bikes, attach it to this end here and lock it into place to prevent theft and tampering. The cradles are adjustable along the length of the bike rack to make loading a little bit easier. How the bikes attach to the rack, we're going to have 3 points of contact. We're going to have 2 straps up at the top here, one off to the side and that's going to serve as an anti-sway strap to keep the bike moving too far back and forth. more

Those wheel cradles are adjustable, all you do is loosen up these knobs and you can move it the length of those bars. Let's go ahead and take the bike off and set it aside. more

Then we have full access to our rear hatch to get whatever it is we need with plenty of space on either side to do so. The cradles themselves are adjustable, the length of the arms and we also have these reflectors on the ends, and also, on the back of the mast we have this tie down here. That's recommended for when you're using Curt hitches, so you use the stabilization strap to keep the bike from moving to far back and forth while you're driving. Today on our 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek we'll be doing a test fit on the Kuat Transfer 3-bike rack. That's part number TS03G. Now I've already got it loaded up just to give you a good idea of what it looks like and how it's going to hold our bikes. It actually secures our bike in two spots. We have this large wheel hook going over our front wheel in front of our brakes, or our fork, whatever comes first, putting down pressure into our front wheel cradle. Then in the back we just have a wheel strap going over and back into itself, and ratcheting down and keeping that in place. One of the greatest features about this bike rack is it has the ability to tilt away so we can gain better access to our rear hatch. more

You're going to want to pull that out, like so, and holding onto the bike rack, let it gently come forward and with that we have access to our rear hatch to get anything we need. To put the bike rack back into position, just simply lift up and when you hear that click, it's locked into place. How the bike is actually attached to the rack, you're going to have two points of contact, we're going to have a wheel hook up at the front here and a wheel strap towards the rear. more

Let's go ahead and take the bike off and set it aside. Start with the wheel straps first. Now, when you loosen up the frame hook, you want to make sure you hold on to the bike at all times so it doesn't go falling forward into the vehicle. You'll see this gray button here. more
