Thule Hitch Bike Racks Review - 2014 Toyota Highlander th912xtr

Today on our 2014 Toyota Highlander, we're going to be test fitting the Thule Roadway 2-Bike Rack, part number TH912XTR. We already have a bike installed on the rack. Let's go ahead and take a closer look and show off some of the features. Now that this bike is attached to the rack, we're going to have 3 points of contact with the bike's frame. We're going to have 2 straps up at the top here and 1 strap off to the side, and that's going to be an anti-sway strap to keep the bike from going too far back and forth possibly hitting the bike in front of it. Let's go and take the bike off and set it aside. With the bike rack in this position, let me go ahead and give you a couple of quick measurements, starting from the edge of the bumper to the outer edge here, we've added about 30 inches to the rear of the vehicle. more

Today on our 2014 Toyota Highlander, we're going to be test fitting the Thule Vertex 4-Bike Rack, part number TH9029XT. We already have a bike installed on the rack. Let's go ahead and take a closer look and show off some of the features. The first one I'd like to show off is that it has an integrated cable lock here in the center of the mast. You pull it out, wrap it around your bikes, and attach it to the front portion here. There's a little slot and then there's a lock at the end for additional security to prevent theft and tampering. The cradles themselves are adjustable and also has 3 points of contact that it grips the bike with. It has 2 strap up at the top and 1 off to the side, and that's going to be an anti-sway cradle to keep the bikes from moving too far back and forth, possibly hitting each other and damaging each other. more

Let's go ahead and take a closer look and show off some of the features. As this bike is attached to the rack, we're going to have one point of contact with the bike's frame, and that's going to be this padded hook at the time. That's going to ensure that your bike doesn't get scratched once you install it. We also have these two wheel cradles on either side, which if you loosen those knobs at the top here, you can actually adjust those the length of the bike rack to accommodate different size bikes and to make loading a little bit easier. Let's go ahead and take the bike off and set it aside. more

Today on our 2016 Toyota Highlander, we're going to be testing the Rola TX1044 bike rack, part #59401. We already have a bike installed on the rack, let's go ahead and take a closer look and show off some of the features. The first feature I'd like to show is the integrated cable lock in the center of the mast. You pull this out, wrap it around your bikes, and attach it to this end here for additional security to prevent theft and tampering. The arms themselves are adjustable, so it gives you a little bit of wiggle room when you're installing your bikes to situate them appropriately. Now how it actually attaches to the bike rack, we're going to have 3 points of contact. We're going to have 2 straps up at the top here and 1 off to the side here, and that's going to serve as an anti-sway strap to keep the bike from moving too far back-and-forth, possibly hitting the bikes in front of it. Let's go ahead and take a closer look, and show off some of the features. The first feature is the fact that it can tilt away from the vehicle with the bikes still attached. To do that, we come to this latch here. Holding on to the bike rack, we'll pull that latch out, let it tilt down, and now we have full access to our rear hatch, to get what ever it is we need, with plenty of room on both sides to do so. I'm even able to get in between the bike and the vehicle to do this. more

Today on our 2016 Toyota Highlander, we're going to be test fitting the Yakima HoldUp 2 Bike Rack, part number Y02443. We already have a bike installed on the rack, let's go ahead and take a closer look and show off some of the features. The first one I'd like to show off is the fact that this can tilt away from the vehicle with the bike still attached. To do that, holding onto the bike rack, you go to this red knob at the base of the mast here, pull out like so, let it tilt down, never gripping it by the bike, and now we have access to our rear hatch to get whatever we need. Now, it just barely clears our handlebars here, so if you have longer handlebars, this may not work, but in this case, we have plenty of room to get whatever we need on both sides. To put it back in its original position, all you do is grip it by the bike rack again, lift up, you'll hear that click and now it's locked back in its original position. Another nice feature is that this has no frame contact whatsoever to hold the bike in place. more

Today on our 2016 Toyota Highlander, we're going to be test fitting the Thule T2 Pro 2 Bike Rack, part number TH9034. Let's go ahead and look at some of the features of this bike rack. The first and probably most important thing about this is that fact that you can tilt it away from the vehicle, with the bike still attached, so you can get to your rear hatch, and get what you need. To do that, you come to this handle at the end here, which is kind of nice, because a lot of other bike racks, you have to reach up and underneath to the handle to pull it out, to actually lower it down. Holding onto the bike rack, we'll pull out the handle, and let it tilt down. Now we have full access to our hatch, to get what we need. Because this actually sticks out a decent distance away from the vehicle, you have plenty of space on both sides to actually get up underneath, and get in there. To put it back into the position we just had, all you have to do is grab it by the handle, lift up. You'll hear that click. more

This is kind of heavy, so it might be a good idea to get an extra set of hands to kind of help you tilt this away. I'll go ahead and do that now just so it doesn't look too awkward. Just lift up slightly, pull the pin, let it come down, and we have access to our rear hatch to get whatever it is we need.
