Swagman Hitch Bike Racks Review - 2012 Subaru Forester

Today on the 2012 Subaru Forester, we are doing a test fit of the Swagman XC Platform Style 2-bike rack. That part number is S64650. We already have our bike secured down. First, we are going to show you how we do that. Then we are going to go over features of the rack. At the top, we have a frame hook that is going to hold our bike down and in place in those little cradles at the bottom. To release that, we squeeze in here, push on that lever, and lift that hook up. We are then able to, pull our bike off of the rack and set it off to the side. With that out of the way, I like to lower the frame hooks so they aren't setting very high. more

Kuat Hitch Bike Racks Review - 2012 Subaru Outback Wagon

Today on our 2012 Subaru Outback Wagon, we'll be doing a test for the Kuat Transfer Platform Style 3 Bike Rack. That's part number TS03G. So I've already got it loaded up on the Outback just to give you a good idea what it's going to look like. One of the greatest features about this bike rack is it's ability to tilt away so we can gain better access to our rear hatch. So we can come down here to our foot petal, where we can use our hand, press in, and lower it down. And as promised, we can get full access to our rear hatch to remove any cargo, gear, groceries, anything we might have with us on our trip. We'll close that back up. more

Today, on this 2015 Subaru Outback wagon, we're going to be test fitting the Thule Roadway 2-Bike Rack, part number TH912XTR. As you can see, we already have a bike on the rack. Let's go ahead and take a closer look, and show off some of the features. First, how the bike is actually attached to the rack. You're going to have 3 points of contact with your bike's frame. We're going to have 2 straps up top here, and 1 strap off to the side, which is going to act as an anti-sway strap to keep it from going back and forth, possibly hitting either the bike rack, or the bike in front of it. Let's go ahead and take the bike off, and set it aside. more

Let's go ahead and take a closer look, and show off some of the features. How this is actually attached to the rack, you're only going to have one point of contact with your bikes frame, and that's going to be the frame hook up at the top here. It's nice and padded, so your bike won't get scratched or damaged while you're loading it up. It also has two wheel cradles here, now if you want straps for that you can go on to etrailer.com to find some, or use your own bungee chords, whatever you feel necessary to secure your bike. more

Kuat Hitch Bike Racks Review - 2015 Subaru Outback Wagon ts03B

Today on this 2015 Subaru Outback Wagon we're going to be test-fitting the Kuat Transfer 3 Bike Rack, part number TS03G. The first feature we like to show off is its unique ability to actually tilt away from the vehicle with all the bikes already installed. To do that, there's this latch up at the front here you're going to push down with your hand, or, while holding onto the bike rack, push down with your foot. Let it fall down. Now you have access to your rear hatch to get whatever it is you need with plenty of space on both sides. To put it back up in its original position, you simply take the bike rack again-never the bike-push up, until you hear it click with it going back into place. Now it's secure. more

I've already got it loaded up on the back of the Subaru just to give you a good idea what it's going to look like. As you can see, it's a sizable rack; we're able to put three more bikes on here. We can fold down the center mast on the other two here when not in use. It secures our bikes in three spots. We have the hook going over the top tube here, putting down pressure into the two cradles, front and rear; and then we have our rubber straps going between the spokes, keeping our wheels in place. Let's go ahead and remove the bike. more

I've already got it loaded up on the back of the Subaru just to give you a good idea of what it's going to look like. It secures our bike in two spots. We have a wheel hook up front here that puts down pressure into the cradle keeping the wheel in place and then we have a rear wheel strap going between the spokes of the rear wheel and then tightening down through the buckle here. All in all, there's no frame contact which is really nice as well. One of the main features about this bike rack is it can be tilted away from our vehicle with all four bikes loaded up. It also tilts up against the rear of the vehicle for reducing the overall length that we've added. Part number on it is TS03G. Now, one of the things that you might notice is that in holding the bike on the rack there is no frame contact at all. We've a wheel hook that's right here on the front. Thule Hitch Bike Racks Review - 2014 Subaru Outback Wagon TH912XTR

Today, on our 2014 Subaru Outback, we're doing a test fit of the Thule Roadway Hanging Style Platform Bike Rack. Part #TH912XTR. As you can see, we do already have everything loaded up on our vehicle. We're going to first show you how we strap down the bike. We've got two cradles holding the bike in place with three straps. Two on the frame here and then one as your anti-sway strap. That's going to keep that bike from swinging back and forth, and possibly damaging your vehicle. To release those, we just pull down and lift up. We save the anti-sway strap for last. We can just pull our bike straight off and set it off to the side. Now, it's a great habit to get into, to always replace your straps so you don't lose or damage any of them. That will just keep them in place whenever you're not the bike rack. All right. Now, let's take a few measurements. Overall to the vehicle, we're adding about 28 inches with our arms extended out. more

First question everybody wants answered is how does the swing-a-way work, it's really easy process. See handle bolt right here, we are going to loosen it up, allow that to tilt down, then we can lift up our black pin here. We will start to rotate this out and away from the vehicle, we can take the time now to pivot this joint till our pin goes back down into our new pin location here. Then we will remove the black pin here on the side, that's going to prevent our bike from going to far when we initially open it up. We can lift that out and set it aside. Continue to swing our rack on out, as you can see we have good clearance there between the rear tire and the side of the vehicle, and then to keep it there we can reinsert our pin that's going to keep it from swinging back toward us. more

Today on our 2015 Subaru Forester, we're test fitting the Swagman Dispatch. This an RBF proved platform style two-bike rack. It's been designed for use in two inch hitches. The part number on it is S64684. As you can see the dispatch has a front wheel cradle, rear wheel cradle, both of those are going to have cradle straps, and also a framed look that's going to hold our bike into position. Does a really good job, it's one of the sturdier fits I've felt on a bike rack. Part of that has to do with the real nice long wheel cradles, they give us plenty of support all the way around the tire, and then we've got a cam-buckle strap, we can just press in the black lever, pull that out, you can see it's a nice long strap, so lots of different wheel sizes are going to fit in there. We've even got a bushing here, this is going to ride on top of most tires, but if your tire is very large we can take that out, or if you've got a really narrow road bike tire that'll take up the space to make sure you get a great fit. more

Our first measurement is going to be down here on the front side where our shortest distance is. That's going to be from the front of the T-handle bracket to the back side of the bumper. more
