All you would need to install a brake controller in a 2006 Ford F-150 with a factory 7-way is the correct brake controller harness. Which would be the part # 3035-P. Once installed the controller will read a . when under all circumstances if a trailer is not detected.
Once a trailer is connected the display should read .c. This means your brake controller is detecting the trailer behind you. Most likely this is due to corrosion on the trailer connectors. You will want to clean both the vehicle's connector and the trailer's connector on the brake output port. 5:00 pin on the truck connector and 7:00 pin of the trailer.
Other reasons for this according to Reese are bad grounding for the controller.
