Strait Line Weight Distribution System Recommendation to Replace Older Equalizer Hitch

Question:

I have a ten year old Equalizer WD hitch with the friction type sway control. The sway control worked OK on my 22ft trailer but does not control my new 30ft. I have seen an add on, cam type system, that replaces the existing chains on the tension bars, and provides a secure mount from the frame to the end of the tension bars. It has new chains that would mount to the original frame mount. Do you offer something like this that I can add to my existing set up?

Sounds like you are referring to a dual-cam sway control setup like part # RP26002. This is a great system that works to fight sway before it starts, but it can't be used with an Equilizer brand WD system like what you have.

Before you look into upgrading your system there are a couple things you need to check first. Is the cargo in your trailer loaded as far forward in your trailer as it can be? Proper trailer loading is the best defense for trailer sway.

The next thing you need to check is that your current system is rated for use on the trailer you have. Tongue weight ratings are the most important factor when picking out a system for a setup. If your new trailer has a higher tongue weight than what the setup has then the WD system would not be effective. To determine your tongue weight check out the FAQ article I attached to the right on the subject. You will want to compare your tongue weight to the rating of the system you currently have.

Most likely your new trailer is heavier than what your current system is rated for, what you will probably need to do is upgrade to a heavier rated system. For one that uses the dual cam setup for sway control you will want a Strait Line series WD system.
