Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Carrier for Cruiser Bike and Childrens Bikes on a 2014 Jeep Patriot
Question:
Hi, my kids and I like to drive to state parks and ride bikes for an afternoon of enjoyment. I have a 2014 jeep patriot with a dealer installed class 2 hitch. It is a 1 1/4 inch hitch. Will this work for a womens cruiser bikes and 3 kids bikes? The kids are ages 7, 11, and 12. The top tube on the cruiser bike is oversized. It is exactly 7 and 3/4 inches around. I know about the top tube adapters you can buy but Id rather just find a bike carrier that will just fit our bikes. Id like it to grow with us as well. The kids bikes will eventually be bigger.

The size of the cruiser bike top frame tube is going to necessitate an adapter bar. But going with a rack that has a single arm and rotating cradles, such as # S64940, is a great idea for childrens' bikes.
The alternative is to replace the Class II trailer hitch with a Class III trailer hitch, such as # 75712, and use a platform style bike rack such as # HR1400Z. This rack holds the bikes at the frames so even with an alternative frame it will still fit the rack. The adjustable wheel cradles will move to accommodate larger bikes as your kiddos get older.
If you decide to go with the hanging style bike rack and keep your current trailer hitch then for an adapter bar you can use # 64005. I have linked some helpful videos to the right for you.
