Towing Jayco Jayflight Fifth Wheel with 2014 Ram 1500 Crew Cab with 5-1/2 Foot Bed

Question:

I used this sliding hitch with my 2007 6 1/2 foot bed with my Jayco trailer with a Leland 7921 king pin extender without any issue and never really needing to use the sliding function of the hitch. I recently purchased a 2014 Ram 1500 Crew Cab with a 5foot 7inch bed and I am wondering if I will still be able to use my current setup.

The only safe way a short bed (5.7 foot) truck can tow a fifth wheel would be to use a stationary hitch with a Reese Sidewinder. Merely using sliding hitch will not give you enough clearance between the front of the 5th wheel trailer loft and the rear of the truck cab.

We have 3 different Sidewinder models that are a bolt-up replacement for the Leland 7921 pin box.

For a Sidewinder for improved ride quality with a 16K capacity, part # ST400-5AS16K.

Now to install the hitch, in your truck, you'll need an install kit like # RP30035-386. However, the install kits currently available aren't compatible with certain Ram models. The kit isn't compatible with Eco Diesel equipped trucks, or trucks with the Air Suspension package. Fifth wheel towing isn't recommended with Rambox equipped trucks.

Since you already have a sliding hitch, you can still continue to use it, but you will need to keep the hitch slid into the forward position. Sliding it rearward would place the 5th wheel's pin weight BEHIND the rear truck axle, which would lighten the front end of the truck enough to negatively affect steering and braking response, potentially leading to a dangerous situation.

I'll link you to one of our FAQ articles that has more information about how the Sidewinder works. It also features a formula that will show you how to determine if you'll be able to complete 90 degree turns.

To install a 7-way trailer connector in your truck bed, I'd recommend part # 41157. I've linked you to an install video.
