Chains vs Cables for 2014 Dodge Ram 3500 4-Wheel Drive Pick Up Truck with LT275/70-R18 Tires

Question:

Hi, We have a 2014 Dodge Ram 3500 4 wheel drive truck. We are heading to Tahoe in December and need either cables or chains to go over the mountain, which is better? Our tires are LT275/70-R18.

I recommend chains because they will have superior traction in snow and grip on ice. Cables and/or rollers have good traction in light snow and a relatively smooth ride.

The Pewag # PWXMR81V you referenced will only work with 185/60-R15 size tires.

The one I recommend is the diamond pattern Titan chain # TC2533. The diamond pattern will offer more tire coverage. The square link type will have squared edges providing more "bite". The ride is a little rougher versus others.

I would check your vehicle owner's manual to ensure that chains can be used with your vehicle. Also, In Nevada, roads may be posted with tire chain requirements under certain snow conditions. Vehicles not equipped with chains on at least two driving wheels and at least two braking wheels on each trailer will not be allowed to proceed.

I have included a couple FAQ's and video review for you as well.
