Comparison of Gooseneck and 5th Wheel Towing

Question:

What are pro and con of 5th wheel vs goose neck hitches? I was told you can pull/haul more weight with 5th wheel. I read ride is smoother with 5th wheel. What are advantages of one over the other? I have a 5th wheel now pull with 2003 Chevrolet short box extended cab with automatic hitch to move away from cab and rear window. Engine is 6.6 duramax with 132k miles and I feel is still running like a top.

Gooseneck trailers are primarily commercially used, while 5th Wheels are primarily used recreationally. A fifth wheel will generally have a smoother ride, which can be further improved by upgrading to an air-ride pin box which helps isolate road shock from the tow vehicle. Gooseneck hitches are typically rated up to 30K, but that capacity will be limited by the capacity of the install bracketry or by the towing capacity of the vehicle, whichever is less. Fifth wheel hitches are available in capacities up to 30K, but a maximum capacity of 24 or 25K is more common. Once again, the actual capacity of the towing system will be limited by the capacity of the lowest rated component.

If folks think they might need to tow both types of trailers, I'll usually recommend they install fifth wheel rails in their truck. Once they're in place, you can install the fifth wheel hitch of your choice, or for a gooseneck you could install a rail mounted gooseneck hitch like # 49080. This would provide great flexibility, you'd be able to tow either type of trailer easily.

Some folks will use adapters like the # CAB-C5G you referenced, but the best practice is always to use the correct hitch for the correct trailer. Adapters can be hard on the frames of the fifth wheel, and in some instances, their usage can void manufacturer's frame warranties.
