I would recommend the drive gear instead of gear 1, 2 or 3. Based on the Owners Manual I wouldn't exceed 50 mph for the first 500 miles when using your 2003 GMC Envoy to flat-tow a Dodge Avenger. The reason is your engine needs to adapt to a heavier load.
There are 5 components needed to flat-tow your vehicle:
Tow bar
Base plate kit
Safety cable set
Tow bar wiring
Supplemental braking system
