Best Weight Distribution Option for 3000 lb Travel Trailer Towed by 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander V6

As a first step, I'd recommend you confirm the towing capacity of your vehicle. According to my research, V6 models of the Outlander have a 2000 lb towing capacity, while AWD versions have a 3500 lb towing capacity. Please confirm this with your owner's manual or your dealer. If your vehicle proves to have the 2000 lb tow capacity, I wouldn't tow that trailer with your Outlander.

To choose a weight distribution system, you'll need to first determine the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer. To that figure, add the weight of any gear stowed in the cargo area of the SUV or truck bed behind the rear axle. I've linked to an FAQ article that explains how to do this. These combined figures comprise the Total Tongue Weight (TTW) of your set-up. The TTW of your trailer should fall as close as possible to the middle of the effective range of the weight distribution system you choose.

Assuming that the 225 lb TW you mentioned is the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight, and also assuming you'll carry 150 lbs of gear behind the rear axle in the cargo area of your Outlander, your TTL would be about 375 lbs.

Due to the fairly short wheelbase of your Outlander, I recommend you go with a weight distribution system that provides sway control. Given the guesstimated TTW, I'd recommend the Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System with Sway Control, part # RP66558. This system is designed for trailers with tongue weights ranging from 400-600 lbs, which should be absolutely perfect for the weight of your Travel Trailer. In addition to providing weight distribution, the system also provides proven sway control, which will make those crosswinds and the turbulence caused by oncoming tractor-trailers much easier to deal with. The system I recommended includes a weight distribution shank, but the trailer ball is sold separately. For a 2 inch ball, use part # 63845 or # 63847 for a 2-5/16 inch ball.

The SumoSprings # CSS-1125R is better suited to suspend cargo carried in the rear of your Outlander. A weight distribution system like the one I recommended will actually transfer a portion of the trailer's tongue weight to the front axle of the vehicle, leveling the ride height between the front and rear axle of the tow vehicle.
