How to Correct Base Plate Drawbar That is Difficult to Remove from Base Plate on 1996 Saturn SL2

Question:

I have a 96 Saturn sl2 that I use as a toad behind my motorhome. I have a hidden hitch base plate installed on the car for my roadmaster tow bar. The bars that go into the base plate are round and are removed by twisting the bars. The passenger side bar removes easily, but the drivers side will twist but cannot be pulled out for removal, seems to be binding on something. Have you any suggestions? Im afraid that driving the car around with the bars sticking out has the potential for a mishap causing injury to anyone coming in contact with them. Hoping you can help.

Removable arm-type base plate drawbars for your 1996 Saturn SL2, such as those in the Roadmaster # 52181-1 and the Blue Ox # BX3310 that are shown on the link at right, should not be too difficult to remove. I am concerned that the difficulty you are having removing the one drawbar could be a result of an impact or other damage.

Has this system been in use for some time or is it new?

If it is a new system then I urge you to take it to the place of purchase for inspection.

If its been in service for a long while there is more chance that it has suffered some damage from excessive force, such as from backing up the motor home with the tow bar connected (an absolute no-no), or even a hit from road debris. If visual inspection shows any indication of such damage then I suggest you have it checked by a qualified local technician.

A base plate that has been in use for along while could also have developed corrosion inside the arm tube. That could certainly account for the hard time getting the drawbar out. In this case you can try a generous and repeated application of a penetrating spray lubricant (like WD-40) and allow it to work for a day or two.

Once you get the drawbar out I suggest you review your tow bar owner's manual for any guidance regarding lubrication/maintenance procedures.
