Recommended Hitch Extender for 6000 lbs Slide-In Camper with 28 Inch Overhang

Question:

I have a 2013 Ram 3500HD SRW with a 2.5 factory HD hitch. I also have a slide-in camper that overhangs the bed by 28 inches. I want to pull a platform trailer with a small car total weight 6,000 lbs. Can I use a 2.5 inch extender or do I have to upgrade to a superhitch with a dual 2inch receiver and use their supertruss.

The Gross trailer weight for the Titan Hitch Box Extension for 2-1/2 inch Trailer Hitches, # RP45292, extended to 34 inches is 4,500 pounds, which falls short of your trailer/car weight of 6,000 pounds.

Rather than replacing your hitch and going with the SuperTruss hitch extension # TLE1524, I recommend using a weight distribution system like the Reese Weight Distribution System, # RP66541. With a weight distribution system your hitch's towing capacities would increase.

Something to consider is when you calculate tongue weight for weight distribution purposes you have to add the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle to the trailer tongue weight. With a larger camper in the bed you could easily exceed the capacity of your system. You will need to determine if your system is rated high enough or if you need a new system.

I have included FAQ articles on determining tongue weight and Common Weight Distribution and Sway Control Questions for you to check out.
