Will the Length of Curt Bolt-Together Adjustable Weight Distribution Shank # C17122 Reduce Capacity

Question:

Hi, I have a 2002 F250 with a class 4 hitch rated at 12,500/1250 lbs. I know that a hitch extension will reduce my hitch capacity. This shank is 7inch longer than my current one but is rated at 15,000 lbs so does that mean it will not derate my hitch to use this even though it is moving the load out from the hitch just like an extension would? In a previous reply to a different quesion, Jameson said, Longer ball mounts typically have lower capacities than standard ball mounts, so that is generally how they reflect the lower capacity from the increased leverage. In the case of the longer shank, the rating is higher than my hitch so how does it take into account the increased leverage on the hitch? Thank you,

The longer Curt Weight Distribution Shank part # C17122 that you referenced will not reduce the capacity of your hitch.

Hitch extenders reduce capacity by the increased leverage and the increased movement they create. Also, tongue weight affects weight distribution systems differently than a weight carrying setup, that is why this product has such a large gusset from the top piece and the lower piece and why it still has high capacities while being longer than most.
