Compatibility of 5th Wheel Hitches with Dodge Ram Pickups with Rambox Feature

Question:

My question is, Why does Reese not recommend the sidewinder pin box and stationary 5th wheel hitch for Ram trucks with the Ram Boxes? Thanks

Reese is not alone among 5th wheel hitch makers in not recommending 5th wheel installations in the Dodge trucks having the Rambox feature. Curt and B&W also do not recommend this truck for 5th wheel hitches. The issue is clearance. Trucks with a short box start off with an issue of inadequate trailer-to-cab clearance and the Rambox feature reduces lateral clearance. That said, there are those that have satisfactorily installed 5th wheels in the Rambox trucks anyway.

The best solution for the turning clearance problem in such trucks is to install a Sidewinder replacement pin box on your 5th wheel and a fixed (non-sliding) hitch in your truck. Sidewinders move the pivot point back from the 5th wheel hitch by 22-inches, providing increased turning clearance. Sidewinder pin boxes are bolt-on replacements that are determined based on your trailer's existing pin box number. The article linked at right gives you the basics of Sidewinders and also includes a table of popular OEM models and the compatible Sidewinder replacements, which include both standard and Air-Ride cushioned types.

A Sidewinder cannot be used with a sliding hitch as this would allow for two pivot points. If a slider hitch is installed it must remain in its forward locked "tow" position and never be released to its rearward "turn" position.
