How is Trailer Tongue Weight Calculated when Choosing Weight Distribution

Question:

When choosing an appropriate weight distribution hitch, do you need to consider the actual weight of the hitch and sway control? In other words, does this figure into the total tongue weight?

Expert Reply:

To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

The weight of the weight distribution system and sway control does not factor into the tongue weight calculations. I have included a couple of links to the right that should also help.
