Installing Roadmaster 6-Diode Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles on 2014 Ford Taurus
Question:
I purchased the Roadmaster baseplate and the 6 diode wiring kit. I got the baseplate installed without too much trouble. I tried to check for power at the wiring connectors going to the taillights, but I dont get 12 volts as I expected. Do you have the Taurus rear wiring color codes to install the 6 diode kit. Checking on the internet, I was told if I wire it incorrectly, I could damage the PCM. Also, where can I tie into the system ground at the rear? Thanks for your help.

Because wiring colors aren't always consistent even among models produced during the same model year, we always recommend wiring by function, not by wiring color. You can use a voltmeter or a simple circuit tester like part # PTW2992. There should be close to 12 volts being delivered to the taillights.
Activate the left turn signal and probe the wires until you find the circuit that makes the tester blink along with the turn signal. Do the same for the right turn, the brake light and the running lights. You'd install the diodes as shown in the diagram I provided. If there's a nearby factory ground, you can use it, otherwise you can simply ground to the vehicle frame or chassis. As long as you do your testing to determine which taillight circuits serve which function, and you wire according to the diagram, you'll have no worries about damaging anything.
If cutting and splicing into the wiring system of your brand-new vehicle doesn't sound attractive to you, there are other options. A wireless magnetic tow lamp system like part # LIW-LDTL might be a good option for you, as well.
