Using a 5 to 7-Way Trailer Connector Adapter on Boat Trailer With Hydraulic Coupler

Question:

I have a 2008 ford F150 with tow package installed. My boat trailer has a 5 pin flat, so i got a 7 pin adapter to connect it to the truck. My trailer break does not work, i have checked the pin out on the adapter and it doesnt appear there is a connection on the adapter to go to the blue wire. Am i doing something wrong? Or did i get the wrong adapter? I have looked at several adapters and none of them have a connection to the break blue pin.

Typically, boat trailers have hydraulic brakes that are actuated by a hydraulic brake coupler that compresses when the tow vehicle brakes, not electric brakes. As the coupler compresses, it forces the hydraulic fluid through the brake lines, actuating the trailer brakes. If your boat trailer has this hydraulic coupler, the extra wire on the 5 pole connector is there to release the brakes when the tow vehicle is placed into reverse, so the trailer can move in reverse.

You will want to ensure that the center pin on your 7-way trailer connector is tied into your reverse light circuit for the brake lockout feature to work. This can be easily done by having a helper place the transmission in reverse and using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 on the center pin of the trailer connector. If you get current on this pin, you are good to go.
