Axle Capacity and Replacement Brake Assemblies for 1955 Airstream Trailer

Question:

Have an old square axle. Vintage 1955 on Airstream. Axle is just over 1 3/4inch square, Grease Seal ID is 1 1/2, Inner Bearing ID is 1 3/8, outer bearing is number 1779 just under 1 and the threads are 3/4. 5 hole mounting bracket. Hub has 412N Hadco MFG marking. Can send pictures if that would help. My Questions are do you know what axle capacity is? trailer specs show Gross 3850# Trailer has Tandem axle. Do you have a new complete electric brakes and hub, bearing package that will fit prefer easy lube or similar 10, but the old ones were 12. Thanks

Given the venerable age of your 1955 Airstream (and those folks DO still make 'em like they used to) it is unlikely that you will find replacement hubs with the same bearing set. It will likely be easier and safer to replace the axles with new ones that will use more common modern bearings.

Axle weight capacity is usually found on a sticker on the axle or frame. I realize that after almost 60 years that sticker may be long gone, but if you contact Airstream with your trailer's VIN number they may be able to tell you the axle capacity. If the trailer's GVWR is 3850-lbs it is possible that its two tandem axles are each rated for 2000-lbs. The link at right will show you all 2000-lb axles, but note that none of these has brake flanges. 3500-lb-rated axles in the 89-inch length are offered with hubs, drums, bearings, seals and the 10-inch electric brake assemblies. Part # e43SR is such a kit.
