Installation Methods for Brophy Recessed Trailer D-Ring Tie Down with Backing Plate # RR5K

Question:

I notice there are different suggestions between the two videos on how to install the Brophy recessed D ring in the wood flooring of a trailer. One video says to use a 3.5inch drill the hole and go down 5/8inch to accommodate the body of the D-ring. The second video that shows its use in a covered trailer shows the installer drilling the same hole clear through the board. Is one better than the other? One stronger than the other?

The Brophy Recessed Trailer D-Ring Tie Down with Backing Plate # RR5K is not application-specific so its preferred method of installation will vary from trailer to trailer. The main factor is the thickness of the material to which it will be mounted. All other things being equal, the installation that only removes the minimum amount of material necessary for clearance under the tie down plate will leave the original surface somewhat stronger than if all of that material were removed. In all likelihood the D-ring assembly, rated at 5000-lbs, will exceed the strength of the material to which it is mounted on most trailers.
