Choosing Between Disc and Drum Brake Assemblies for 2500 lb Boat Trailer

Question:

Im considering buying SS disc brakes for my trailer but have read that if the trailer gross weight is under 3,000 lbs., I should go for drum brakes. My trailer, with boat, motor, etc. comes in at 2,560 lbs. Is this too light for surge disc brakes? The trailer has no brakes at all at this time and I do plan to occasionally launch in salt water.

If the boat and trailer weighs less than half the weight of your tow vehicle, the trailer might not have enough momentum during a braking event for surge brakes to be effective. If you're above 1/2 the weight of the vehicle, I'd rather see you go with disc brakes, due to their increased performance.

Since you'll be launching in salt water from time to time, the increased corrosion resistance of the Dacromet rotors included in the # K2HR35D Kodiak Disc Brake Kit would certainly be a benefit, but the # K2HR35DS would offer superior corrosion resistance, offering stainless calipers and hardware. You wouldn't get the same corrosion resistance with galvanized drums and brake assemblies.

The hub/rotors use the # L68149 inner and # L44649 outer bearings, so you'll want to check your existing wheel bearings to ensure they're compatible. You'll also need to make sure your axle has a brake mounting flange mounted behind the hubs to provide an attachment point for the brake caliper. These kits are compatible with 13 inch or larger rims.

I've linked you to our FAQ article that explains what you'll need to add disc brakes to your boat trailer.
