Trailer Brakes Lock Up when Plugged Into 2002 Chevy Silverado Using 7-Way to 6-Way Adapter

Question:

2002 Chevrolet 1500 HD pickup. Originally parked utility trailer in working condition with this truck. Went to use it, same trailer, same truck and the brakes are locked when the 6 pin trailer plug, into converter into truck is used. When you unplug, the brakes release. Have put a new breakaway battery and breakaway switch. Have put a new 6-7 pin converter, same as I had before just new. Put a new truck side plug and now have put a new Hopkins controller with wiring harness to plug into module under dash on left side. Instructions said to plug red wire in slot A on the plug for my year model truck. I removed my old controller a Draw-Tite Activator 5100. I noted the plug used to plug that one in, used 5 wires instead of 4 and the position of those wires are different than that of the Hopkins 47795 connector I received. The old plug wires has a 6884 orange label. Old controller wiring pattern Dark Blue on Cinch slot - Trailer Brake Controller Switched Output Red on Binch slot - Fused Trailer Brake Controller Battery Feed Light Blue on A: slot - Vehicle Stop lamp switch to brake controller input Small black on F: slot - Brake controller ground Small brown on Dinch slot - brake controller illumination Hopkins 47795 Used only 4 wires and all were in place on the connector except for the red wire. The instructions said to put the red wire into Slot A: if a 1999-02 model year. #47795 Wiring - White - Ground Blue - Electric Brake Black - Battery Red-Stop Lamp Switch - Put in Ainch slot. I used a Hopkins 47284 controller Push on brake and controller shows E1 with nothing plugged in. Hooked up trailer and controller showed E1 however brakes on trailer were locked. Unplugged and brakes released. Controller shows E1. I didnt want to replace and replace and replace, but now I have. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. It is probably something easy but I can see it and it is becoming frustrating. My next step is to buy a new truck with tow package and a new trailer. Maybe it will work then Ha - just wishful thinking! Spent too much money and still no results. Help, help, help - Please.

This problem is occurring because there are 2 different ways that a 6-Way trailer connector can be wired. The center pin will either be electric brake output or the 12 volt circuit. The adapter you are using must be set up for the opposite way that the trailer is set up.

So what is happening is the 12 volt circuit on the vehicle is connecting to the brake circuit on the trailer side. As soon as you plug it in the brake lock up. Happens all the time.

You will need a different adapter, such as # HM47570, which will allow you to switch between the 2 different ways a 6-Way can be wired. Or you would need to take apart the adapter you have and switch the 12 volt and brake output pins. You could also do that with the trailer connector on the trailer if you cannot take the adapter apart.
