How to Replace Existing 7-Way Connector on Dodge Dakota with 6-Way Connector
Question:
I have a 97 Dodge Dakota with a 7 pin connector for the trailer. The 7 pin is shot and Iam going to replace with a 6 pin. I need the wiring of the dodge so I can make the change.

I do not have a vehicle specific wiring diagram to offer you, the 6-way connector would be wired as shown in the photos of the trailer connectors on our wiring FAQ page. As you remove each wire from your existing 7-way, I would recommend using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 on each wire while each lighting function is activated to verify its function. Then, label each wire. This will make installing the new 6-way much easier. The wires would be connected to the 6-way as follows: starting at the top of the connector and working clockwise, the top terminal is for the running lights, next is the brake controller output voltage, then the right turn/brake, then the left turn/brake followed by the ground. The center pin is for the 12-volt accessory power circuit.
